MT. Rushmore and Crazy Horse tour

we just did the tour with Mount Rushmore Tours out of Rapid City actually near Hill City we did the all-day tour, and it was well worth the just over 100.00 per person charge. i have to say it was great, our tour driver was excellent. he was fun and made us aware of all the things to see. https://mountrushmoretours.com/

I visited the Crazy Horse memorial in 1977 and it looks exactly the same now as it did back then. Nobody is working on it, despite the fact that the admission fee to see it was supposed to go towards the construction. Where's the money? I think I know where.

Visited it early this spring. There was certainly some money spent on the visitor's center, museum, gift shop, parking lot and restaurant. Very impressive facilities. Maybe someday the monument itself will be finished. I enjoyed my visit. YMMV.

I have to admit that out of the dozens of attractions we’ve seen since starting a journey west about a month ago, the only one that disappointed me has been Crazy Horse. The whole vibe there was suspect.

While you are there near mt. Rushmore you may want to visit Custer State Park. It is about an80 mile loop through the park and they have BISON. Large, big BISON. Start your trip through the park in a counterclockwise direction. You will not see any Bisfon a long time… but you will. Another interesting fact is that there are three tunnels through the mountains, upon exiting all 3 tunnels when you see the light at the end of the tunnel, you will be looking directly at Mt Rushmore.
I pity the people that go the opposite way…

Strange because I visited it last year, and in 1988 and could see significant progress on the carving. The visitors center, and museum, along with the performances have all been added also. With less than ten people working (a couple of grandsons included) on the carving and zero taxpayer dollars involved, I think it’s an amazing task that the family has taken on. The days we were there, the equipment was clearing debris from where they were working on the finger. My children enjoyed Crazy Horse and commented they can’t wait to show their children someday and see the progress. Much better than Mt Rushmore (which was never finished, the government said it was good enough).
The story of a single man deciding this was to be his life’s work knowing the scale was such that he’d never see it completed, but started it anyway to honor a Native American hero is not only admirable but inspiring.
I’m sorry that you only see what you think is nothing being done and you think you know where the money went (?). Take another moment to think what this one man and his family have accomplished with only donations and their own sacrifices.
I am not employed by, nor related to the family. Just really impressed that an orphan from Boston dedicated his life to honoring a great leader of people when our own government never even thought about it.

There is a whole lot of a back story to the Crazy Horse Monument AND Mt. Rushmore. It might be a good idea to look at the full, true story behind the two before commenting. The Federal Government did offer to fund the Crazy Horse Monument but the sculptor refused. There was also bad juju between Crazy Horse sculptor, Korczak Ziolkowski and Mt. Rushmore sculptor Gutzon Borglum. Borglum fired Ziolkowski who was working on Mt. Rushmore. Ziolkowski said he would build something bigger and better than Rushmore. If you took the tour, you would have noticed that Ziolkowski was somewhat (being kind) egotistical and eccentric.
Take the tours or read the history for yourself!

We visited Crazy Horse yesterday. There appears to be differing opinions about the motives and methods of the family behind it, but this much is indisputable: Korczak Ziolkowski was an exceptionally talented sculptor.

We spent nearly three hours walking through the Indian museum and visitors’ center. Did not pay to go to the top of the mountain…didn’t feel we were missing anything by not doing so. For $35, we got our money’s worth.

its an 8 hour tour. you get to see things you would probably drive by and not see you get a breakfast and a diner plus a western show that was fantastic. it would of cost me nearly 100.00 to drive my rig around the tour loop. i don't have to fight traffic ( lots of traffic) plus NO parking fees and i get dropped off at the front door every time. nice air-conditioned bus with a comedian for a driver. IT WAS GREAT! money WELL spent.
