Question Myrtle Beach to New England

When the pandemic hit we were in the planning stage of a summer trip to Toronto and on to New England. We are now considering a visit to New England, skipping Toronto, this fall (Toronto was to attend a tennis tournament). Currently we are thinking about 6 weeks, if we need 2 months that's okay. More than 2 months and I'm ready to go home.

We are starting with a clean slate with some must see items on my list (DH has yet to provide his). Currently on my must visit list:
Cape Cod,
Salem,
Vermont Country Store,
Niagara Falls,and
Syracuse

We plan to take I-95 to Virginia, head west and pick up I-81 before jumping off to points unknown. On our way home we plan to stop in Philadelphia (camping across the river in NJ) and DC (camping at Cherry Hill).

There are so many places we've been in the past that we might want to visit on the way up and back. Falling Water, Charlottesville, Gettysburg, and Lancaster are always favorite stops Perhaps next fall to revisit.

What are your suggestions for routing and other must see sights?

I've always tried to avoid the DelMarVa area by leaving I-95 for I-81...
I-81 will take you up to Scranton and on to Syracuse and Niagara (Buffalo)

If you're going to do Buffalo, (Niagara) I would suggest "going over the falls" (driving to the Canada side...) it is a better view of the falls... and if you are on that side, you might as well do Toronto as well (it's not that much farther...) Plus, it will be much better than backtracking through New York, to Vermont...

To do that would line you up to head over Montreal on Canada 401... (a little over 340 miles, or 5-1/4 hours on the highway...) and you would be running along side of the North shore of Lake Erie and the St. Laurence River.

Then it's your choice to either head South, down Canada A15 (which takes you to I-87 in the US) and on to Lake Champlain, which straddles the New York/ Vermont border... OR, take Canada 10 east, from Montreal, to the A55 which is I-91 South (the Vermont New Hampshire border...) You'll definitely be able to see the Vermont Country stores then. Once you satisfy your country store fix you can head over to Concord, NH and south to Salem... But, do yourself a favor and head over to Mount Washington (But, take the cog railway, because you RV will kill itself trying to get up to the top...)

After the Cape... Newport in Rhode Island is a nice day trip. Heading West will take you to New London in Connecticut and from there you could put the RV on the ferry to Long Island and hit the "Wine country"... Unfortunately from there, patience is going to be a virtue because heading further West puts you deep into the metro area of New York City...
BUT! That said, before you leave Long Island getting to the south shore and Fire Island National Seashore is a must see, if you're already there...

From there you're heading South down the "Jersey Shore"... And on your way home...

Happy travels... there is just so much good to see from the road!

First time in a motor home. We haven't ventured further than Lancaster in the RV.

I've noticed that there are many parkways and routes that are not RV friendly.
Bobphoenix mentioned the ferry from CT over to Long Island. I checked that out when planning in 2020, there was a local park on Long Island (very odd, I can't locate it now) I checked out but they didn't allow dogs plus the cost of the ferry made the decision to skip LI easier, especially the horrendous traffic and limited roads.

Just some suggestions…..Swan Bay Resort, Alexandria Bay,NY is right on the St Laurence Seaway. Nice resort to watch all the big ships passing by and numerous boat tours you could take. Leaving Alexandria Bay you could drive to Plattsburg and take the Plattsburg Ferry across Lake Champlain to Grand Island, Vermont. Don’t know the route number but is very easy, not Highway. The ferry runs 24/7 and is very reasonable since it’s about a 15 min. crossing. Don’t need a reservation, just drive to the dock and the attendant will tell you what lane to pull in. We do it with our 31’ towing a Jeep.

Grand Island is scenic, one winery that I know of, farms selling produce etc and a state campground and Apple Island Resort, pricey, but overlooks Lake Champlain. Vermont, of course, has the Green Mountains, Ben & Jerry’s factory, Cabot Cheese, covered bridges and two or three locations of Vermont Country Stores.

New Hampshire has the white mountains worth exploring. Maine has a wonderful coastline and Acadia NP. Bar Harbor will be crazy busy.

Foxwoods Casino and Mohegan Sun offer areas for RV parking overnight in CT. MysticSeaport and Mystic Acquarium are maybe half hour away? There are some wineries in the area.

As mentioned, RI has Newport offering numerous mansions to tour, beaches, restaurants and plenty of shopping. There is a huge state campground whose name I can’t remember in southern RI.
(It’s not Fishermens CG, you’ll never get in there in the summer).

Cape Cod again will be crazy busy in the summer. We like the National Seashore beaches tho sharks are a real issue. You can get in the National beaches for free if you have the Senior Pass. There are lots of great bike trails,

Enjoy whatever you decide. Hope this helps you a little bit.

Thanks for all the great ideas. It has been years since we've been to CT, I'll look up the campground in Newport. Luckily we will be visiting in the fall.

If you decide to go back to Gettysburg, take a short run over and see the "Flight 93" Memorial. It is really a nice stop over for a couple of hours.
We were there the summer of 2002, at that time there were just a chain link fence around the site.

CT/RI: Yeah Fishermens Memorial Campground Narragansett, Rhode Island is "almost" impossible to reserve, might get lucky and get in on a cancellation (has worked for me in the past) Down the road from the campground is the ferry to scenic Block Island, Narragansett beaches, shopping. Also it is about 45 minutes day trip to Newport RI and Mystic, CT. Nautilus Museum is close by too, worth a visit.

VT: also check out Champlain Adult Campground. Well maintained campground, gets great reviews. has a rock pier that overlooks the lake

Toward southern Vt is Winhall Brook COE. This would be another tough reservation to come by but the whole area is loaded with VT country charm... including VT country Store about 10 minutes away. Scenic ADA Rail trail that leads to falls. The river that cuts through the middle of the campground has riverside swimming, just picture a Norman Rockwell Painting.

Quechee / Pine Valley KOA Holiday in central VT is a clean well maintained campground. lots of up scale shopping in the area and a short drive to NH

Also 2 out of the box ideas for CT worth considering would be

West Thompson Lake COE in the northeast corner of the state & GrandView CampResort & Cottages in Moodus. Been to both many times, well worth a visit.
