Need A Base Camp Near Lake Tahoe.

The subject says it all. We want to explore and enjoy Lake Tahoe and the immediate area as well as visit Carson City and Reno. Probably Truckee too.

Our original plans were to stay at Zephyr Cove for 3 days then move on to Carson City for 4 days. Now I'm thinking we just stay at one location for at least a week.

Any thoughts or ideas? How long should we stay to take it all in? Should we stay in one place? What is there to do?

Thanks in advance.

Traffic can be awful around Tahoe. I would stay in Truckee. There is a very nice, big tree shaded campground there whose name I can't recall.

Well, almost when you throw in Reno/Carson City plus when? Do you need FHU? Are you headed east back to Fla... had enough of CA.

Campground by the Lake/S Lake Tahoe, CA is one of my favorite. Too far from there to do Reno so I'd stay in Davis Creek regional park between Carson and Reno. I would add Virginia City to your list.

These links will show other CGs close bye to the 2 above:

Reno is primarily Casinos. If you are a fan then stay closer to Reno. It is about 45 minutes from Carson City.

Carson City is not very exciting, IMHO. But between South Lake Tahoe and Reno.

Virginia City is fun for a day and can be reached from all three locations.

We have stayed at Zephyr Cove RV Resort many times. At one time our rig was in the pictures of their campsite. It is a, popular, great and convenient RV park.

But recently, picking and reserving your specific site is more difficult. Some of the rv sites back up to the busy hwy 50 and the resort intersection. You could be assigned one of those.

Having been to all three destinations many times. If I could get a site at Zephyr Cove that is where I would spend my week.

We'll be coming up from the Lee Vining area (may visit Yosemite from there for a day - I know - long day, but not too interested in going all the way to Yosemite area with the RV).

It will be around mid June, next year. We'll be leaving from there and headed to Lassen NP.

I think I keep my original plan and stay at Zephyr. Maybe stay 4 nites, 4 so we can hang out in the Tahoe area and make visits to Carson City and Virginia City (and maybe Truckee & Silver City). Then I can move on toward Lassen NP. There is no rush.

Thanks so much for the help.

Coming from Lee Vining, you may be tempted to depart 395 to 206 to 50 to Zephyr Cove.

It can be done with an rv, but that is one steep climb to get into South Lake Tahoe.

I think the grades are easier for most rv's from 395 to 50 in Carson City.

thanks for the heads-up. I checked, it looks like about 10 miles of 7% grade. Not impossible. Will give some thought to the longer route through Carson City.

I’m thinking you mean taking NV270 from US395 versus 50 is a good choice? Or are you recommending staying in Kingsbury? I didn’t find a CG in Kinsbury so I’m pretty sure you are talking about the roads.... just trying to confirm.

Thanks.

Kingsbury Grade is another name for the 207 cutoff from 395 to South Lake Tahoe. I have towed up and down that route a few times -- it is not bad.

We have been staying at Coachland RV Park in Truckee for the past 25 years.

We do day trips from there and drive the road around Lake Tahoe to take in the sites.

Truckee has a couple restaurants we like so it works out well.

Thanks, profdan, that route looks less sever than cutting across on 50.

Here is thing about Truckee, Arch.... it almost seems out of my way given where I am coming from and going to. So, unless persuaded otherwise, for now I think I'll stick with Zephyr Cove.

We stay at Comstock Country RV Resort in Carson City.

You’re right on 50 so you can pop over the mountain to Tahoe and stay on 50 for southern attractions or cut north on 28 for East and north attractions.

In CC you’re close to Virginia City for a day trip and close to the hot springs north of town.
