We have reservations at Austin Lone Star in December. Stayed at Pecan Grove our last time - ok, but am looking for something a bit better. Hopefully Lone Star will be the ticket.

The sunsets are fantastic!!! GOOD LUCK!
Nice place - not inexpensive. X2 on the sunset. From our site late Sep this year.

It is not really conducive to driving to Austin for night life if any adult beverages are involved (nothing is really) and no public transportation. But still a great place to stay.

+1 on this one. We just spent a week there for a dog show. It was very nice and clean. Pretty easy to get anywhere.

McKinney falls state park South Austin is a hidden gem in the metropolis. Quiet, wooded and picturesque. Close to Austin, but I don't know about public transpo.

Where in Houston do you want to stay? Lots of choices. some good, some mediocre and some just plain trashy.

In Houston - look at Northlake or Westlake. Both very nice. I think they have an EastLake as well.

Lone Star is the closest to Downtown unless you want to stay in a very small park near the river. Cab fare from Lone Star downtown was less than $20 as I recall.

Also have stayed at LaHacienda, but way to far to enjoy adult beverages downtown in my opinion.

Lone Star isn't bad, but I would try and get a space near the back of the park and if you are light sleeper, run one of your roof fans or I carry a 20" box fan for these occasions. Good luck!
