New England Trip

I think I am going to take a trip to coastal New England next week, leaving from Rochester, NY. I love the water, so the coastal thing is key. Connecticut, Rhode Island, Mass. and possibly Maine. This will be my first big trip and I am in no hurry. I won't be making reservations as I am not sure how far I will be up to driving each day. Is this a silly plan, to just wing it? Any suggestions appreciated.
Thank you,
Bassetbait

August is traditionally the busiest camping season in New England. You would be wise to have reservations, particularly for weekends.

Since you are visiting from NY I believe you are (currently) exempt from Maine's Covid-19 rules, but do verify the current requirements of each state a few days before you plan to visit, just in case things change and a negative test is required.

I'd call a couple of campgrounds just to see if might have room for you.

Mystic KOA is a great location if you have a toad. RI beaches, Mystic Seaport, and New London all within 30 minutes. I still have family in RI and was there for Thanksgiving. This is one of the only year-round campgrounds in Southern New England. But just as previously stated...call first. This is the busy season everything in the area.

We are in Maine now and have had no problem finding a place to park. The more persnickety you are, the harder it will be, especially if you don't like trees in the path of your satellite signal or kids. If you don't mind either one you should have no problem at all. Most of the parks we have been in for the last month in NY, VT, NH and ME are about half full.

Fishermen's memorial state campground in Narragansett, RI. Tough to get a site this late in the season but maybe you can get in on a cancelation. Beaches down the road, centrally located about 40 minutes drive give or take from Mystic Seaport, Ct & Newport RI. If you bring road bikes you can ride them down to the ferry (5minutes away) and spend a day on Block island which has touristy shopping, restaurants, and of course biking. I believe you can also rent mopeds or bikes on block island. But its worth a day trip.

Salisbury Beach State Reservation, 2 beaches walking distance from most campsites, W/E sites, about 40 minutes drive from southern ME attractions.

Atlantic Oaks Campground, Eastham MA, clean well run family campground at the midpoint up the cape. National Seashore & bay side beaches 5 minutes away. Famous Arnolds Restaurant next door

Hope this helps
Mike
