New Jersey to lake Champlain to Clayton

Last fall we traveled North from New Jersey up the Northway ( Rt 87) to the Canadian border then over Lake Champlain and down thru Vermont. We had a great time with nice Mt. Views traveling Rt 7, then back down to Lake George and home. This year where hoping to leave Sept.9th and spend 10 day traveling up to Plattsburg (Lake Champlain area) then west to Massena and down along the river to Clayton and travel south down Rt 81 and home. I was hoping to here from someone who has made the trip with some information on the elevations and roads going across to Massena a few campgrounds would also be great.

Thanking in Advance
Mikeeg

It's mostly flat along the northern boarder of NY. We used to drag our 30 foot boat from Burlington, VT through Massena to Watertown, NY then down 81. Watch your speed going through the Indian reservation.

Flat is a good word , last yr. tried traveling a long Lake George north to Lake Champlain we where detoured over Tongue Mt. because storm damage and that was not that much fun ups where a climb but downs where hair raising. We where alomost 2 hrs. on the road and ended up two exit north of Lake George. If anyone takes that route make sure your toad brakes are working you will need them.

We stayed at the Massena International CG last summer. Very clean bathrooms which is a good indicator of a CG that is well maintained. The land along the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario is called the Erie-Ontario Lowlands. It is mostly flat there.
