New Mexico

The wife and I are planning a trip to northern New Mexico in September. We are both in our 70’s so we don’t boondock much any more. We prefer Fed & State type campgrounds with quiet and scenery. We don’t do the “tourist” thing anymore so local attractions other than nature aren’t necessary.

We are looking at I-40 and north and tow a 27’ Wildwood.

Any suggestions?

Storrie Lake State Park in Las Vegas, NM is pretty quiet and nice. The NRA Whittington Center south of Raton, NM is open to non-NRA members and is also very nice. We saw lots of wildlife there. We have stayed at both places and enjoyed them.

I'm not sure if you want non-electric sites or not. We love national forest campgrounds so you might get the name for the national forest, such as Santa Fe, and plug it into this site to find campgrounds:

https://www.forestcamping.com/dow/list/nflist.htm

We've also stayed at Cochiti Corp of Engineers just north of Albuquerque and close enough to Santa Fe to do a day trip.

Also Abiquiu Corp of Engineers has electric. It on Hwy 84.

There are state parks - go to the NM site. There are some nice forest service around Red River/Eagles Nest - pretty area.

Check out Cochita Lake COE campground. Water and Elec with some 50 amp.
We LOVED it. Depending on your trip timing the annual Alburquerque balloon festival makes area parking spaces expensive and hard to find at the last minute.

Hi jj. Here is my trip report of my excursion to northern NM last summer. I spent most of my time around Kit Carson NF and Rio Grande del Norte National Monument. The hiway around the "Enchanted Circle" is very scenic, incorporating the towns of Taos, Questa, Red River, Eagle Nest and Angel Fire. There are campgrounds in the towns, or lots of camps in the forest especially around Red River. I had never really heard about the Enchanted Circle before researching it for my trip, and I only had a few days there, so would like to return to see all the places I missed. Enjoy!

If you get up in the Taos area you can camp in the parking lot of the ski area for up to 14 days, not sure what all to do besides hike but the ski area is trying to schedule some events in the summer now.

NM state parks are quite good. We like Villanueva is quite nice. Datil has a good BLM campground. Abiquiu Lake is a good camping site.

There are 4 good sources for the types of campgrounds you describe: State of New Mexico, BLM, Forest Service and Corps of Engineers. All can be very good.

Heron Lake up near Chama, NM is a nice place to stay. There is water and electrical at the developed sites with bathrooms and showers walking distance away. There is a dump station at the entrance to the developed sites that you can use as needed (on the way in, during your stay, on the way out).

The lake itself is a no-wake lake so mostly fishermen, sailboats, kayaks, canoes, etc...

Eagle Nest and Angel Fire have been evacuated due to large fire.

Villanueva and the Chama area would meet your stated desires.
