North Cascades national park

We had planned to stay at newhalem campground at the end of July/beginning of August and when I went online today to make reservations it said that they were closed during that time for a paving project. I looked at a few other campgrounds in the area and they are either pretty rough or a bit of drive. Are there any suggestions any of you might have?

We're headed out there this summer as well. Depending on the size of your rig, there are a few smaller campgrounds such as Goodell Creek and Gorge Lake. No hook-ups but it could get you in the area. We're staying at Newhalem in the middle of June.

Thanks for the suggestions. I really like the idea of Goodell but am a little reluctant to plan on it exclusively since you can't make reservations there and our 5th wheel is 34' so I would imagine sites that would accommodate it are likely sparse. Perhaps

Is there an advantage to being on one side of the park vs the other? I just had planned to stay at Newhallem because it would fit our set up and it was inside the park. Is the KOA in Winthrop too far away from the park sites and trails?

The KOA in Winthrop is decent, with lots to do in the immediate area.
Quite a trek to the Newhalem area from Winthrop, but definately doable for a day trip in the toad.

That was what I was figuring. If you had to pick one side to call home base, where would you pick (knowing Newhallem isn't now an option)?
