Old Palm Springs Trip Report (122)
We enjoyed a few days in The Palm Springs Area in March. While much was closed, we found some gems of Old Palm Springs.

Just spent a week at Catalina RV resort in Desert Edge, (10 miles east and across the hill) from Palm Springs, and took our Polaris Rangers for some desert exploration. The nice thing about this resort, other than the hot springs fed pools, fitness facility, and other amenities, is that it is literally right at the “desert edge” and we were on the outer rim of the park, so nothing but a view of the desert and very easy access. I thought a week would be too long, but when it was over I really wasn’t ready to leave.

I've been going to Palm Springs area for 50 years. Family moved there in 1960s and late 1980s. Winters were beautiful. In mid 2010s went there in our motorhomes. Mostly stayed in Indio. Indian Waters Rv park. Then in 4 years they doubled rent. Family died out and haven't gone back. Always enjoyed entire area. But costs are rediculous there.

Those off road vehicles look like a lot of fun! Love your photos! I noticed a few in the desert by the dust trail they left behind. My only worry would be breaking down in the middle of nowhere! :-)
We love the Palm Springs area before it gets too hot, and love Joshua Tree especially. It is great to see so many enjoy the area in different ways.

We used to take long day hikes and I packed a lot of camera gear around, did some decent wildlife/landscape work, but now it’s short hikes and a cell phone. The polaris lets us get out to places we wouldn’t otherwise see, and like us, our dogs aren’t up to the long hikes any more either, but they can ride with us. It’s also electric and I replaced the 8 big 6v lead-acid batteries with about half of a Nissan Leaf battery.
So now it has twice the range and weighs almost 600lbs less. It also has about 3” more ground clearance now. So it really gets us out there, it’s reliable, and it’s quiet. We see more wildlife than you ever could in a gas powered UTV. We watched a male roadrunner from about 6’ away in his natural habitat - really missed the Nikon and long lenses. Next time.
Anyway it’s our toad and it allows us to stay out exploring all day. Not welcome everywhere, but we choose our destinations with that in mind. And since it’s no more obtrusive than an electric golf cart, it doesn’t bother anyone, and we can carry an ice chest and chairs, so we maintain our leisure standards and don’t go thirsty. Also poke around with a metal detector sometimes.

I’d love to see a blog on your outings and your mods to your Polaris. Take care and wishing you many great adventures in the years ahead!

Fiesta48, 50 years is a long time. Sounds like you loved the area and I imagined it has changed a lot over the years? Id love to have your suggestions for our next visit!

Thanks to both for your posts. We stayed in Indio for a week in the spring of 2019, our first visit in the motorhome to CA. We were there to attend the tennis tournament in Indian Wells so we did not have much free time. If I recall, we were going to go to Shield's but it was closed. We are planning to head back out to CA this winter and will hopefully have time to explore Palm Springs.
