The DW and I are planning a mini vacation trip north to south down the Oregon coast (101) from the Portland area in mid July. Anyone have any special recommendations on places to stay? We plan to leave Portland on a Monday and spend 3 or 4 days getting to Eugene. I've heard the entire coast is awesome so most anyplace is nice to spend a night, but is there someplace(s) we just shouldn't miss.

We haven't found any place on the Oregon Coast that we don't enjoy but we really like Winchester Bay RV Resort.

I've stayed in a number of Oregon State Parks, they are all very nice. Their online reservation system is awesome, you select a site from a campground map, view a photo of the campsite, lots of great info and easy to reserve a spot.

Love this coast. Don't miss the Bowpicker fish and chips across from the maritime museum and Fort Steven's is a great place to start. We like Nehalem Bay a bit further south. South Beach just south of Newport is a great base to visit that area. The on-line reservation system maps include angles to back in and depth in feet of each site which can be a big help if you have a big rig as we do. You will love this coastal visit.

And just above Newport is Beverly Beach SP. South Beach is closer to the city itself and alll of its great restaurants, museums, and other attractions.

Both SPs are great places to stay while visiting Newport.

Newport is also home to probably the best RV Resort on the Oregon coast in Pacific Shores Motorcoach Resort. A little expensive, but a fabulous place to stay. Any class A or C (25' or larger) is welcome....no coach age restriction. If you do stop by there, go over to site #18...I'll have a cold beer waiting for you.

Make it a definite to tour every lighthouse along the way!
The state parks are great.
Plan 2 stops so you can easily see everything from Astoria to Florence since you're exiting to Eugene. Perhaps around Lincoln or Newport to tour the northern part and at Florence to tour some south of it.
Tour the Astoria Column in Astoria - unique.
Seaside is very commercial with lots of shops and a boardwalk, if that appeals to you.
Get an ice cream at Tillamook Creamery
Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport if very nice
Devils Punchbowl at Newport
Cape Perpetua Scenic Area for wildness north of Florence
Heceta Head Lighthouse at Florence (we gave tours there)

The above are just SOME things....3-4 days isn't enough time.

I asked this same questions a few months ago and if knew how to post a link from my phone I would. After all the suggestions, we decided to make reservations at Fort Stevens. For a large family like ours, the campground offered a variety of activities. We can not wait for summer to come.

I'd like to thank all those that replied to my query especially to BFlinn181 who pointed us to the Oregon State Parks and Rec site. That is one great site for searching and finding what type of campground you want to stay in. We'll spend some time at Cape Lookout SP , then at Bullard Beach SP and finally at Jehidiah Smith SP. Beach and mountains for a few days.

If you get as far as Port Orford then you can not beat Port Orford RV Village. We were for 2 days and on our last night one of the owners can out while we walked the dogs to thank us for with them. It very pretty, flowers all over the place, happy hour every evening and coffee in the mornings

Tillamook Bay City RV Park, Tri City RV Park, and Prospect RVPark/Crater Lake RV Park

We stayed at all three in 2011 and they were good for visiting the surrounding areas

Don't miss the maritime museum in Astoria. Great explanation of the river and the "bar." It was our favorite stop. We went as far South as Tillamook.

Just spent time at Nehalem Bay State Park, Great place to stay. Also liked Cape Blanco. A little different but remote. Jessie M Honeyman if you want to be close to where you can go for Dune rides. Basically, the whole highway has lots of great choices.

Netarts Bay Garden RV Park. Netarts Bay Garden RV Resort You can rent a boat and go crabbing. Very friendly park; also right on Netarts bay. We had a great time there. They will also cook your catch for you. Very close to Tillamook.
Can't go wrong with any of the State Parks, and yes do take time to tour the light houses!
