I have lived in this desert for a few years now. There are many campgrounds around palm springs, palm desert, thousand palms area. Many to choose from. Salton Sea area has a few as well, but only one I would stay at, and even it is questionable. Lots of drug users and transients in the Salton Sea area. Borrego springs is about 30 min away from the Salton Sea and I believe a better option, there is a few RV parks there too. Borrego also has alot of open area for dry camping. If you have any questions about the area, or run into any snags when your out here, send me a message. Now that I think about it I've been here in Salton City for 7 years........sheesh.

The Fountain Of Youth cg is fairly close to Salton Sea.
You can either get a site with all hookups or a boondocking site
with use of the showers and all facilities.
Grocery shopping is approx. 45 minutes away but you can get some stuff
at the cg. Salton Sea can be very smelly at times. You cannot swim
and sometimes the amount of dead fish along the shores make it
difficult to "enjoy a stroll".

I'd suggest you stay in Borrego Springs and do a day trip around Salton Sea. I think you'd be happy with that choice.

We are currently at Palm Springs Oasis RV in Cathedrsl City. Clean park with pools. There are several places to stay in the Coachella Valley. In all honesty the Salton Sea is dying and an ecological disaster in the making. I’d rather you take a trip to Joshua Tree National Park and just enjoy everything the Coachella Valley has to offer.

The Salton Sea has become a large septic tank for Mexicali Mexico. Google “New River” and it explains how Mexicali dumps their raw sewage into the New River which flows into the Salton Sea. At times in the summer the odor can be smelled 20 miles away.

thanks so far for all the good info. Never sure what I get myself into when not from the area. That's why this group is a valuable resource.

Yes, good info for this seemingly under-reported on area. I was thinking about attending the tennis tournament in Indian Wells in March. Are there any good boondock/BLM sites near Palm Springs?

You can stay as long as you want at the casino in Indio.
They also have security running through the grounds.

I lived in palm springs for a few years, no boondocks areas close by. It's a typical city. Parks only as far as I know.
Edit to ad, depends on your idea of "close by" about 90 min. Away is wide open.

The best in the area would be at Borrego Springs or Ocotillo Wells areas. There's some around Mecca and SR79 around Aguana - national forest lands.
Palm Spring area - try the casinos

We stayed at fountain of youth a week last year had a enjoyable visit ,loved the pools and whirlpools after 3 weeks at Quartzsite. Monthly rates were favorable didn't actually go to Salten sea even though visible from campground.

I've stayed in the Palm Springs, Indio area. Most RV parks have gone up 50-100% in the last 2 yrs. Desert Hot Springs is much more affordable but can be windy. Salton Sea is the pits. Call ahead for reservations. Winter is high season. Do RV park reviews and google maps to locate. Many remote parks are nice. Also prepare for high electric rates for monthlys.
