Palo Duro Canyon State Park

What months spring or fall would be the good weather? Not to hot and not too cold!

We were there this past May, temperature was 70's to mid 80's the only drawback for us was the constant wind.

Stopped at PDCSP on the return trip from picking up our RV late April, though we didn't actually stay inside of the park at that time, and agree with Butlersdad, was nice and very windy. Looking at accuweather.com, it appears the best time would be late Sept or early Oct. Going to make another stopover there on our way to YSNP later this year. It's a nice park.

We were there Easter weekend this year. Delightful. Was told it's windy all the time, although we didn't find it bad at all.

Was there a couple years ago and was nearly blown away. A local replied "you do know this is the windiest place in America". I believe him!

I haven't been there since the early 80's but if I remember right the wind is much less in the fall, mid-September and October. We lived northeast of Amarillo and fall was the best time of the year in general.

I was always impressed more by the rattlesnakes at Palo Duro. They were very healthy.

Spring and Fall. It's Texas! Not predictable. Also do not miss Caprock Canyon State Park, you will camp with the Bison there.

One more negative. Stay tuned to the weather because flash floods are a possibility.

Back to positive. The rattlesnakes taste like chicken and they make neat belts and hat bands.

I vote for Fall. Always seems less windy. I have raced mountain bike races in the Fall inside the park and the winds have been calm. Maybe just lucky.

We were there in April a few years ago and it was cold. But we still enjoyed climbing the canyon and hiking the trails.

We were there April 17, 18 and 19 this year. First time there and we loved it. It was very warm but don't remember any wind.

Be aware the access road (winding road from street level to canyon floor) is not Big Rig (42' - 45') friendly. No visibility at corners and the road is narrow and very steep.

While the road is narrow in places, there are passing areas, we did unhook and sent the toad down ahead. Wife could flag opposing traffic. 43 Ft.
