Pay extra to reserve a specific site ??

Yes, A few times I've paid $15 or $20 extra to reserve a specific site vs them just assigning you a site. Today, I went to make a reservation for a CG near Asheville that we have stayed at many times. It's under new ownership and they wanted to charge $250.00 to reserve a specific site !! In past years this CG had no surcharge for a specific site. They have also doubled the nightly rate. Getting greedy !

We know guests enjoy certain sites and we will make every effort to accommodate requests, but simply cannot guarantee it. Sites are assigned by the automated system at check-in. While we guarantee your chosen site type and amenities, our automated system may change your site location. We recommend that you lock your chosen site. The lock fee is a non-refundable $250.00 fee per reservation. If you lock your chosen site you will not be moved except in an emergency.

Sounds like they do not want to reserve a specific site. I have paid a few dollars in the past, but never an outrageous amount like they want. Time to find a another CG.

Considering the CG only has 45 camp sites requesting a specific site for a specific time period can cause scheduling conflicts and potentially requiring the CG to turn away campers who's stay time conflicts with your requested time period and no other campsites are available. Call it a perfect storm of reservations. Probably a somewhat rare occurrence but it's their camp ground and their rules and fortunately there are plenty of other places to stay.

As someone who as of yet has rarely stayed in campgrounds I was quite shocked at their pricing structure! This must be a destination campground. You are paying the rates of a decent hotel to park in one of their sites! I may need to rethink our future plans for next winter when my wife finally retires!

(I train people to fly powered parachutes and most of my rv camping time is spent at airports or large fields)

I would call the campground and ask if perhaps the $250.00 is a misprint and they really ment $25.00. They may not be aware of it, or….

I have seen cost for this as high as $25.00, not what they want. But the key wording is "in an emergency". What are their definitions of an emergency?

But as mentioned, contact and ask if that price is correct, or a typo.

I too have paid a fee for "the last site" available only to arrive and find three open sites next to me, two of which remained open during our stay!

I think this might be the case, because this campground REALLY loves the dollar amount of $25.00.

“Subject to availability; early check in fee is $25.00 per hour.”

“Late check out fee of $25.00 per hour”

“To be eligible for a refund you must cancel your reservation within the specified time frames to receive a refund, minus a $25 processing fee.”

We did call as I thought the same, that it was a typo and supposed to be $25. nope --- $250 is correct ( but not acceptable)

Pay extra to reserve a specific site ??

Automated reservations systems don’t like assigned spaces and the computer moves things around constantly up until your arrival to fit others incoming date requests. Reserving a specific spot messes with that system possibly losing them campers who want longer stays . The real reason in clear language is they don’t want your specific spot reservation because they are making more without it as there are plenty who don’t care and will take random placement.
As to empty spots I see more and more people book and pay for a spot and not show. The spot is paid for so can’t ( responsibly) be sold again.. what if the person who paid actually shows? There are plenty of people who the money is not important and book 2 campgrounds.
Just wait until you find variable pricing [emoji6] that’s the latest and greatest. Campground not full at booking? low cost .. getting full? higher. You may have paid 50 but the guy next to you paid 100. Same spot. Just like airlines

Variable pricing at hotels and motels is part of the reason I no longer take long motorcycle trips. Also I find an RV much more comfortable in my old age. It drives me nuts to always be subject to a negotiation when booking a hotel room - are you a member of this or that? Do you have a reservation you made a year ago? Are you old? Are you a veteran? Left handed vegan? Do you have the right credit card? etc. Give me the good old days - Motel 6 was $6, 8 Days Inn was $8 for a nicer room than Motel 6. Today they'd have to be $60 and $80 or more, it would just be nice to know in advance. I hope the RV parks don't start this nonsense. But I prefer Forest Service CG's or boondocking anyway, this would just make me more willing to seek them out.

One answer is there are new online sites that notify you when there are vacancies in places you choose. Then you just have to make the reservation.
