Retirement starts this Friday, Monday the road trip begins, one of the places that I want to visit on my way to Florida is Natchez,Ms. Looking for your insights on where to stay, things to see and do. Any info on the natchez trace and driving tours in around the area appreciated.
Need big rig parking when suggesting camping areas.

After Florida and bugging my kids I am workcamping in Fletcher Nc so any thoughts on things to see and do in that area appreciated. i will be there for the summer so will have lots of time to sightsee.

Every time I cross a state line I stop at the first visitors bureau for advice and a map of MUST SEE places.

Riverview RV Park is a nice campground in Vidalia La. That is across the river from Natchez.

Best place to stay is River View across the river in Vidalia Louisiana. It is on the levee overlooking the Mississippi River and is owned by the town. Great view of the river and a paved walking path along the river.
There is a restaurant under the hill by the casino. I don't remember the name but they do have parking beside the restaurant.
I would suggest going to the visitors information center on the bluff NE of the river bridge.

We did one of those narrated bus tours around town and found it to be an excellent introduction to all the highlights of Natchez. They we went back on our own later to fully check out what had interested us.

We've traveled to that area multiple times and here are the places we like to go:

Beautiful old church: Church Hill Loop Route - Natchez Trace - Mississippi | NatchezTraceTravel.com Located just out of town at the intersection of Churchhill Rd and 553. The front doors are usually open and you can climb the stairs to the top landing at the front of the church that overlooks the sanctuary.

Windsor Ruins (absolute must see): Windsor Ruins - Port Gibson / Alcorn, Mississippi | NatchezTraceTravel.com You MUST see this place! It can be a little tricky to find but it's so worth it.

William Johnson house: http://www.nps.gov/natc/historycultu...amjohnson.html IMHO a must see. Seems to be a part of history that a lot of people don't know. William Johnson was a freed slave who owned his own barber shop (hence The Barber of Natchez) along with numerous buildings and a lot of land in and around Natchez. Absolutely fascinating.

The Old Country Store (don't miss this!): The Old Country Store Restaurant - Lorman, Mississippi | NatchezTraceTravel.com Do yourself a favor and eat lunch here. You won't be disappointed. Best fried chicken in the world. It's supposed to be the oldest continuous operating store in MS

Rodney, MS: Rodney, Mississippi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia OK. This place can be very hard to find. Each time we go I have to print out maps from google and pay super close attention. It is literally in the middle of nowhere but if you like a little adventure and aren't afraid to get off the beaten path then gotta go here. You'll go down dirt roads but I've been in my car before and had no trouble.

Homes in Natchez: Dunleith, Longwood, Melrose. To me these are the 3 must see homes. You HAVE to see Longwood. Period.

Camping: Natchez State Park

Don't know how much time you have but St Francisville, LA is a few hours south of Natchez and that's another place that belongs on a bucket list. Anyhow, hope you have a fun time!!

We stayed at River View across the river in Vidalia Louisiana in January this year. This is an excellent park. You can see our visit to Natchez, the RV Park, and the area on our blog.

Last time thru on the BMW, too early for a drink. I passed Fat Mamas near the river. It is home of the "Knock you naked margarita". Have one and let me know what I missed.

Know a guy, retired, bought a Class A, full timed. They drove all over the country the first year, 18,000 miles or so he said. Always moving, stayed no where more than a couple of days. Every night planned ahead.

Second year but less than half the miles, just east of the Mississippi, and started spending a whole week in a place before moving on. Got better nightly rates and really felt they were enjoying their coach, the experience and more.

Third year they spent 3 weeks to a month outside bigger cities and put huge miles on the toad. They exhausted the list of things to see and do before they unplugged and moved a couple hundred miles to the next long stop.

He reported they spent major buck the first year, and remember the highways. The second year he remembers places and food. The third he remembers the people the, the changing weather, the way the landscape changed as things bloomed and the seasons changed around them. They found farmer's markets, went back to the better food places they found. They did pot luck meals with newly made friends. They walked and smelled the roses. It was three almost totally different years of travel he said. He wishes he had done the third year type of travel all three years. He can't remember why the hurry, he felt he was still having to be back on Monday's.

Enjoy you retirement, many of us will never get to do what you get to start next week. I hope you report back to share with us still tending the desks back home.
