Planning a roadtrip to the California Redwoods

Anyone stayed at Elk Country RV Resort in The Californee Redwoods near the pacific cost?
My wife and I would like to visit the Californee Redwoods at Lady Bird Johnson Grove May 5th.
We thought Elk Country Rv Resort would be our base camp, with our 22ft Kodiak, unhook the truck and cruise around for three days to stie see the area.
How about it you all, anyone been at this Californee Rv Resort??
Thanks, PJ

Decades ago it was a membership park and we used to spend 2 weeks there every summer. Back then there were no RV spots up front like now - that was all blackberry bushes and we made tons of blackberry cobblers over the years. They used to sell fresh blackberry pies in the old schoolhouse on the property. Haven't been back since the membership company went belly up.

Just north, in Orick, is a small roadside burger joint - back in the day they served awesome burgers, but again we haven't stopped in there for probably 30 years.

For what it's worth, we like Kamp Klamath RV, up near Prairie Creek. Very quiet and rural. But some folks don't like it -- too funky. The bathrooms are old and run-down.

Prairie creek was our first pick for a base camp, but the MAX length of tt was 21ft
And we could not make a reservation.
LADY BIRD JOHNSON GROVE IS WHERE THE WIFE WANTED SPEND THE DAY, AND ELK RV RESORT IS 18 MINUTES AWAY.
WHATS NICE WE CAN DISCONNECT, HAVING A TT FOR A BASE CAMP.A MOTORHOME WITH A TOAD CAN DO THE SAME THING.
MOST OF THE SCENEC QUIET PLACES TO SEE THE ROADS ARE TO SMALL FOR MOTORHOMES AND TT
FUEL IS GOING TO BE A KILLER THIS YEAR, AS LONG THE FUEL STAIONS ARE OPEN, THE FUEL TANKS CAN GET FILLED.
HAPPY TRAILS, PJ

We love the Redwood coast. The Prarie Creek campground is old and it was a squeeze getting our 19' trailer in some spots. We ase camped farther north outside of Crescent City at Redwood Meadows RV Park. Fun day trips to Redwood State and National Park, Jedediah Smith State Park and Oregon Caves.

Have fun.

Three routes to Choose from

I have a Question to Choose from three Routes to Northern Californee Coast.
Coming from Lake Tahoe Interstate 80 west, There are three Routes I am looking at to get to hwy 1 at Elk Country RV Resort.
I am pulling a 22ft TT, The three routes in question is I80 to hwy 20 to hwy 5. 1) To continue on hwy 20 to hwy 1 and follow hwy 1 all the way north.
2) Go north on hwy 5 to Red Bluff hwy 36 to hwy 1 north on hwy 1.
3) Go north on hwy 5 to Redding hwy 299 to hwy 1 north on hwy 1.
I'm not worried about time there is only 15-20 minutes difference.
What I'm concerned with is the Road Terrain, Grade and Twisties.
Route 2 looks the best on Google earth but it is hard to tell.
Any one have Experience on those routes?
Thank you, happy Trails PJ

Don't take 36, for sure!

I'd take 80 to 5 north to 20 to 101. And as you get off onto 20 west, stop at Granzella's in Williams for a muffletta sandwich. Tough to eat in the car, but delicious.

I-80 to 20, 20 is not bad, it gets a little curvy before dropping into Nevada City/Grass Valley. Then flat until you cross I-5 and then you have some grades before you get to Clear lake. Around Clear Lake it is slow going thru the small towns. You hit 101 just south of Willits You can see the Skunk train that goes over to Ft. Bragg in downtown Willits.
Have towed my old trailer over 20 a few time and have driven it in a car many times as I went to school in Eureka and still like that area of the coast.

Thanks for the info,
I-80 to 20 to 101 looks like the easiest route, as long as I do not go to fort Bragg and follow hwy 1 to Leggett.
I really wanted go hwy 36 from hwy 5 red bluff west, to visit Grizzly Creek Redwoods where they filmed star wars.
How are the grades on hwy 36 from how 5 to hwy 1?
It might be slow going with The GMC Sierra 1500 5.3 gas pulling 6k, the summits are 2800ft, I just do not know the grade, old faithful will make it.
Happy trails, PJ

The word on 36 is twisty -- very hard to keep the trailer from going over the center line. I have never taken 36 myself -- I have heard from reliable sources that it is not trailer friendly or big rig friendly.

They say it's great on a motorcycle, though. Check out this article:
