Private campgrounds near Orlando

Looking for campground in or near Orlando in late December. Fort Wilderness is booked. I’d prefer to stay at a state park but it seems availability is an issue. Where do folks say?

I couldn't find anything 'near or in' Orlando when I visited and ended up out at Apopka at the Lost Lake Campground. To get into Orlando, you really need a car because the bus takes several hours to get to Disney World, Uber drivers won't come out to Apopka to get you, and parking an RV at DW is verrrrry expensive.

But I really liked the campground and ended up staying there for 5 months I think? There were huge storms up north that winter with roads that were basically sheets of ice and snow, along with unrelenting wind so I just stayed put there. Weather was great most of the time. Enjoyed riding my bike up and down the several miles of bike trail.

Thanks! I’m familiar with Apopka. I would be driving car from campground to the parks, so that’s not an issue. Good to know.

What area of Orlando are you trying to be near? There are TONS of choices in this area that are not Ft Wilderness or State Parks

I stayed at Tropical Palms Resort & Campground in Kissimmee about 10 years ago. Decent location that's 4 miles to Disney.

Last time we were in that area, we stayed at the Sherwood Forest RV Resort in Kissimmee. It was relatively close to the Disney parks.

Along with the parks others have mentioned, Orlando/Kissimmee KOA is nice, only a few miles from Disney. Kissimmee RV Park is also close to Disney. Both have nice pools, friendly staff etc. Bill Frederick Park at Turkey Lake is just minutes from Universal and is a beautiful destination in itself. Orlando SW KOA (in Davenport) is a short drive to any of the parks. We’ve stayed at all of these in the past 60 days or so. There’s plenty more choices out there but I can recently vouch for all the above. Clean, friendly etc

Thanks for sharing these. I’ll check them out. I’m not a big fan of KOAs, sites tend to be on top of one another.

We're staying at both of these come next winter:

Orlando/Kissimmee KOA:

Camp Margaritaville {Formerly Cabana}: (This one is further out, but you'd be hard pressed to find a more awesome resort)

I've got a reservation in 2 weeks at the Thousand Trails Orlando (the one directly west of WDW off of US 27) which is named "Orlando RV Resort" helpfully. It seems to be about a 15 minute drive to the maingate area in WDW, which is about average for most of the off-property locations.

I know nothing about the place other than what is available online, sites seem to be large though. They will rent to anyone, you don't have to be one of their camping pass members. Actually from what it seems like based on the reviews, those camping pass members get the crap sites and the cash customers get the good locations. Such is life. I'm not usually the RV park type, but this is a family vacation and it's cheaper (ish) than running the generator. Need the AC for the cats.
