Recommendation in the FL Keys

Hi folks, we are looking for a some campground recommendations in the FL Keys for winter of 2020. We would like to spend a week or two traveling through the Keys.

Thanks

When we went to Key West, I decided it was Bluewater Key or bust. BUT, either be a lottery winner or be willing to spend an obscene amount of money.

The first time we went was for Christmas 2014. We got a waterfront spot. It had our own private tiki hut and we did Christmas with my in-laws out in it. It was crazy expensive ($200/night with the extra people add-on fees) but still much less expensive than my wife's aunt and grandmother spent for a boutique hotel in Key West.

We went back for Thanksgiving in 2016. This time, we got an interior spot which had the most insane tiki hut. This thing was easily a 40' x 40' L-shape. It had a living room w/ TV, 10-12 person dining table w/ another TV, and a kitchen that had a full-size residential fridge, microwave, toaster oven, and sink. In addition to the tiki hut, the spot was extremely private and had a couple of sitting areas out and around.

On a budget, I've been trying to get into Sunshine Key and Fiesta Key through the Trails Collection program/add-on w/ Thousand Trails. But my travels are limited on the days I can travel and duration that I need to stay so we won't end up there until May :(. They end up being $20/night through the program. I've had many friends stay at them.

The state parks, if you can get in, are supposed to be beautiful. But you have to watch for cancellations and have flexible travel plans. Plus, I think length limits are in the 38-40' range (guessing! I could be wrong).

I've also considered Lazy Lakes RV as a budget option for Key West. It seems much more utilitarian than the luxurious Bluewater Key, but the price tag reflects it. We'll likely also try and give them a shot this summer.

On the opposite end of the price spectrum, we just booked in September at Pennecamp State park in Key Largo for $45/night with a 55 ft space but kinda tight. There's also an Elks Club in Tavernier if you are a member for $40/night.

Also, check out Pennecamp on you tube to look at each space and reviews

I'm surprised it hasn't come up yet, but depending on when you want to be there you should have been booking by now, especially if after January 1st. Space has always been at a premium over the winter, more so since the last hurricane visited.

Hi DickJr,
For me the choice would be Sunshine Key. It's around MM47. About 1 1/2 miles past the 7 mile bridge. Go to https://www.rvonthego.com/florida/su...tory%20Listing and read about it. I've stayed there many times. There is so much to do from Seven Mile bridge to Key West is will be difficult to decide what to do first. Two days in Key West is plenty for me. If you go, mind the 45 MPH speed limit. It is strictly enforced to help save the Key Deer population.

After 10 years of 3 to 4 month stays, on a boat mooring, in Marathon Key, for $320 a month, we put the boat up for sale and moved to an RV.

We booked 1 month at Sunshine Key for $1,100. We reserved our December 2019 spot in December 2018. By Febuary the rate more the doubled.

Florida state parks have an 11 month booking window.

Tomorrow March/22/2019, at 8 AM is when you need to be ready to book Feb 22, 2019. Use the app, Reserve America

Sunshine at the beach, three spots from Highway 1. Beautiful spot, very LOUD at night. Get further in to break down the sound.

We have stayed at 3 venues in the keys. Pennekamp State Park, The KOA on Sugarloaf Key and Boyds Key West. We have never been able to find an opeing at Bahia Honde State Park at a time we wanted to go.
The private camp grounds all seem to be expensive and they pack you in like Sardines. Wherever you want to go, you need to book it now if you want to go during the winter months. Every place fills up early.
