I have stayed on both sides of the mountains and "love the Cherokee campground"! Activities and entertainment as well as trout fishing, swimming pool and a whole lot more. Pleasant days and cool nights on the stream.

Do the CG's tend to fill up? Should I make reservations sooner than later (call it ~1 week stay)???
Strongly suggest Townsend. Several parks in town. On the river, some pretty good eating, excellent tubing river experience, easy drive to Gatlinburg/pigeon Forge and the Maryville/Knoxville area.

Do any of you have any recommendations for a campground to stay at that gives best (or broadest??) access to attractions in the park?
Have to get back to the basic question asked....When you mean "attractions in the park". Do you mean things like the waterfalls, hiking and the mountain views?

As with all of our previous visits to national parks ... we do not know what is really there until we have visited . We would be looking for natural attractions (or man-made history of the park), and hiking opportunities - especially if the hike is rewarded at the end by some lovely view

It looks like "sequestration" could effect the availability of national parks. I noted this relating to Great Smoky Mountains
