Recreation.gov-Reservations

in march i was setting up reservations on line for a coe park. i could reserve up to may 28. memorial day weekend followed. it would not let me reserve thru the weekend. the reservation system showed the weekend as first come first serve. i thought that since we had the site up to the 28th that we would be able to keep that site. looking at the reservation yesterday, i saw that the weekend was reserved by someone. did i screw up? has anyone else run into a problem like this with recreation.gov?

It was probably fully booked except for a few first come sites.

Weekends are booked 6 months before.

If there are first come sites, you may be able to grab one on the morning of the 29th, in person. May be a line though. Call the campground.

Reservations open on a rolling window. What the site was probably showing was you couldn’t reserve a site beginning 29 May, but you could have reserved a site beginning earlier and through the weekend. And I would definitely not count on a FCFS site at a COE campground over Memorial Day weekend. It is always a very busy time.

We have an Army Corps of Engineers Lake/Dam near by so we have to use Recreation.gov to book. Every single weekend is booked as soon as available. Folks book them all then cancel the weekends they don't want or can't use. There's no penalty for the cancellations. The employees say the phone rings off the hook on Fridays from folks checking for cancellations.

That's a horrible practice. Why don't they charge a big fee for cancellations or no-shows? People that do this are so selfish... me, me, me.

You'll be camping there on the morning of the 28th. Be at the office when they open and if nothing is avalable, pack up. As it stands, you'll have to anyway.

yea- i'll check in the office on the morning of the 28th. but as i said, when i reserved a site there for the 20th, i was doing it so i could reserve thru the weekend. but the website showed the site we chose was a first come site for may 28- 31. i had figured that since we were in that site, we would just keep staying there thru the weekend. but in the meantime since march, the site must have been released for reservations for that weekend. that is what has me confused.
