Route 2 West

We are headed out soon ( within the week) on route 2 west from Rhode Island. Any favorite camping spots in Michigan, Minnesota, North and South Dakota, Montana? Usually we have this mapped out and a pretty good idea of places we'd like to stop. But a serious family health problem prevented long term planning. Not big into RV resorts, we like state, federal, COE parks. Time is not an issue.

Wow, quite a trip. We usually stay at Indian Point Campground in Duluth, Mn. Not in the city per se, but close. You might try Fall Lake Campground north of Ely, Mn. Highly rated.

Last year we returned to MI from East Glacier NP via Route 2. Interesting ride thru ND. Check CG's as they are somewhat limited - full of shale oil workers. Most cg's are mom/pop style unless federal or state. Can't remember any "resort" style between MI and East Glacier.

We have stayed the city park in Two Harbors MN on the shore of Lake Superior. Great drive up the west side of Lake Superior to Canada.

The Upper Peninsula of Michigan is beautiful and any of the state parks are great. If you have time go to Paradise, staying at Tahquamenon Falls State Park. The Whitefish Point Shipwreck Museum is very interesting. Then take 28 west to Munising and take the Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore tour. There's a very nice forest service campground right on Lake Superior at Munising. There's also a city park there.

If you then get on Hwy 41 go up to Copper Harbor and stay at Fort Wilkins State Park.

Further west in Michigan you could work in Porcupine Mtn. State Park. Then get back on Hwy 2 west.

Plan you last North Dakota stop around Minot. Then you won't have to try to stay around Williston, where the workers are.

Then from ND travel west into Montana and your next stop should definitely be Fort Peck near Glasgow. It's a wonder Corps of Engineers park with huge manicured-lawn sites. As you continue west from there you'll see why Montana is called 'Big Sky Country'. It's a beautiful site.

Use the top 1/2 of your fuel tank. In Michigan be sure to get some pasties for lunch. They're what the miners take with them. Awesome!
