Trip Summary

It was a great trip! I followed the routing suggested here utilizing 17/50/66 from 81 and connected to 95 at exit 133 near Fredericksburg. In Jacksonville, I went through on 95 going in, that was around noon. On my way home I utilized 295 which was a much more pleasant drive.

As to the Google map I had created, I used it until my first truck stop and it worked normally with traffic warnings etc. Beyond that, I entered my destinations from one place to another and did the same with my seven year old Garmin GPS. Additionally, I switched between Waze and Google, each had some benefit. Now that Google owns Waze, perhaps it will be incorporated into one program. My Garmin was updated just prior to this trip and it performed flawlessly. In fact, it saved me a couple of times from navigation errors whereby the Google maps on my tablet did not. Glad I was using both units, and of course, I had paper from AAA. Overall, the Garmin still maintains an edge over Google mapping in addition to its ability to magnify turning points etc which is a wonderful feature.

Many thanks to everyone whom contributed to this mapping thread, hopefully it will be useful to others.

Question Reviving My Old Thread re Mapping

Old dog and I are going to be driving back to Florida, an unforeseen trip and have a couple of questions for the experts.

Generally, I use a combination of Walmart and truck stops for sleeping, has anyone noticed a change in policy along Rt 95? The one I called near Fredericksburg told me that "security" says to say "no" if you ask, but people still do it without much issue. Unfortunately, truck stops are pretty much filled along 95 from Virginia all the way to Florida. Even the front lots are jammed up.

Another option which might provide a place for sleeping at truck stops would be to take 81 to 77 to 95, but I'm leery about driving through Charlotte NC. Any experience with that routing? Just looking for suggestions, most of you here are much more experienced that I. Thank you!

81 to 77 to 95 is a good run. You have to navigate Fancy Gap, but to me thatís a fun piece of highway. Several good Flying Js along the route.

I77 thru Charlotte is better now that most of the construction back ups are done. Timing is the key. Anywhere near an AM or PM rush hour can be problem and Sun is best.
The south bound down hill run below Fancy Gap no problem headed S. Its a long uphill climb headed N.

- I-81 to the VA state line. There is a Flying J at exit 323 take has easy access and a state rest area just past the FJ exit.
- At exit 313B, I turn off on Rt. 50 heading to Paris
- Turn right onto Rt. 17 (watch the 35 mph speed limit)
- Jump onto I-66 for a short stint and they turn off on Rt 17 again
- Take to Opal where you take an exit to circle around to stay on 17 (great BBQ and truck stop on left)
- That will lead you to i-95 in Fredericksburg
- My stops after that are FJ Exit 11 Emporia VA, FJ Exit 181 Latta SC, FJ Exit 29 Brunswick GA, FJ Ft. Pierce FL

If you have a smartphone, download Google Maps which will route you around any traffic on 95.

Safe travels!
Why do you take Rt 17 to 95 then North just to stay in Emporia Flying J??

I go straight thru Richmond....maYbe 10 to 15 minutes of traffic and much shorter

I take 9b around Jax to the east...not as busy and I think shorter... Chuck

Either outer loop or straight thru works fine. The delays are north of the approaching CLT

So in summary, is the Route 81 to 77 trip less hectic than the 95 beginning at Richmond?

I need to end up in central Florida this time, near Winter Haven. I can use my original routing and rather than cutting over to 95 the way RVThere and you describe, I continue on 81 to 77.
