There is a gas station at MM 102.5 in Key Largo that is easy in and out if you are heading south. Can't remember the name but it is just after the entrance to John Pennekamp State Park.

There are several spots to get fuel in the keys. To address your specific question: the last place before the Keys is a large facility (I think it is Racetrack) at the junction of US1 and County Road 997. I'm gas with toad I'm 50 feet.

I usually fill up on the Florida Turnpike at the Snapper Creek service area which is about mile 20 and is the last fueling stop on the Turnpike. I can make it down to Sugarloaf Key (MM22) and back without needing to refill.

Going southbound, the stations in FL City are VERY tight and VERY crowded. I did stop at a Hess station in FL City going northbound in March and that had plenty of room (it was about 5am so it was not crowded!).

Even 'spacious' Keys gas stations may not have room for you if they are crowded with cars.

Hi reubenray,
Mile marker 36 (about). There is a station on the ocean side of the road. Easy in and out. Consider filling up on the mainland. As you travel through the Keys, you'll see stations and you can top off as you feel comfortable. In Marathon, the highway splits and there is a median between north and south bound lanes. There is a least one station (maybe more) in this area.

We choose poorly on two different fills on our Keys round trip from Tampa Bay Area over new years. I had to run out and unhook the toad twice.... Once at a Flying J on 75 and once at a station on US 27 in Miami.

I am sure that fuel is more exensive in the Keys. Better to fill up before you get there, around Homestead.

This looks like a good spot to top off my tanks prior to hitting the Keys. I may have to wait until I can get the outside pumps.

On just about every trip I have been able to swing into a station that worked out great that I spotted while driving.

My scheduled fuel stop before getting to this location is a Haines City Flying J.

I fuel at the FL turnpike service plaza at MM19. That fuel load will take me to my destination in the Keys (MM 14), and then all the way back to MM 305 on the return trip. It may take me farther, but that is my routine.

Gas

I posted this, in part, on another forum last week and received several positive comments. I too have been concerned about being able to access gas stations occasionally when in need of refueling. I recently located a means on-line to actually LOOK at the various stations on-line in the areas where I expect to refuel. Incidentally, I too will be leaving for Marathon later this week. Try this:
Type in: 1. "Gas stations, Marathon, Fl., Overseas Highway"; 2. An insert map will come up with stations in that area identified with alpha letters i.e. a, b, c, etc.; 3. Click on...say "b" and you'll see a small picture of the station on the upper left of the screen (street view pic). Click on this picture; 4. A full screen of that station will then appear; 5. Depress and hold the left mouse key and drag the picture around for a full 360 degree view of the station.

This process makes it very easy to identify and select the station(s) with the best entry and egress. / Larry
