According to the Ski Association of Hawaii:
Mauna Kea (Hawaiian for 'white mountain') is a 13,796' (4205 meter) volcanic mountain whose summit sometimes gets a skiable/boardable mantle of snow. There are no lifts, no grooming, no resort, but a road goes to the summit to serve the dozen or so world class observatories located at the summit.
LOL. This does not sound like a "ski area", even by very loose standards.

I can solve your winter camping and skiing problem...come to Lynchburg, VA! We have Liberty University Snowflex! You can ski or sled (tube) year round. It is open to the public fr a low cost fee. If it is too hot, you can go to Smith Mountain Lake to swim and water ski.
Liberty Mountain Snowflex Centre
PROBLEM SOLVED!

It's not, which is why I earlier brought up the concept of lift-served ski areas. Mauna Kea is essentially road-accessible backcountry skiing.

As a professional ski journalist, and someone who skis Utah's Cottonwood Canyons upwards of 100 days per season, I can assure you that the snowpack there is essentially the most reliable in all of North America. While early season is indeed early season anywhere, your odds of decent early snow cover are better in the Cottonwoods than just about anywhere else. All it takes is one good five-foot November storm and a decent pair of rock skis.
While it would certainly be easier to weather the winter in an RV down in the Salt Lake Valley, there is one option available near to Brighton and Solitude as the Forest Service campground called Spruces in Big Cottonwood Canyon is actually open year-round, but even then you'd still need a car or a ride on the UTA Ski Bus to get to the slopes. Otherwise there's no option to camp in either Cottonwood Canyon in winter.

"the most reliable in all of North America"
Not to Mention the "Best Powder on Earth"
Little Cottonwood Canyon - Alta/Snowbird, nothing like it anywhere.
Amen,

Well, the ski areas on the island of Hokkaido, Japan give the Wasatch resorts a run for that title, but good luck getting your RV there.
