San antonio tx. Campgrounds

Are there any state or fed campgrounds near San Antonio? By near I mean to use as a homebase for touring the area including San Antonio.

Search (Google) Texas State Parks. Guadalupe S. P. north of SAT on Highway 46 between Bulverde and Boerne might work. How big is your rig? Many SPs won't work for larger rigs.

A little farther north is Inks Lake State Park in Burnet, TX. It is a great place with great Hill Country scenery.

This is no where near SA, great park but a solid 2 hour drive on a good day.

Did a quick search on Texas Campground Reviews - The Best of Texas Camping - RV Park Reviews and it shows 29 locations. My advice, take SA and cut it in half, do not stay anywhere in the southern half, southside of SA is the hood. Boerne, Stone Oak, Bulverde, Helotes are all good areas. Try to avoid downtown with a MH, lots of one way streets and some are very narrow.

Good luck!

Stop at a welcome center and pick up the RV Travel & Camping Guide to Texas. Inside is a TACO card.
(TX Association of CG Owners) good for 10%-15% discounts and many adds for CGs.

If you are going to spend much time in TX get the TX Park Pass $70, but free admission to all the parks an 4 1/2 price second day stays

If you have a smart phone you may want to down load the Allstays app. You cam zoom in to the SA area and see all the is available. The filter is good to eliminate things you are not interested in. It's a great tool.

Travelers World Carefree RV Park on Roosevelt Ave.. Nice place (high water pressure) and a 20 cent ride by bus to the Riverwalk! Very convenient. Enjoyed our stay thee while visiting the area last December.

Palmetto State Park east, about an hour and 15 minutes. Pretty closed in and will be hot in the summer. Guadalupe River State Park, a good hour north. Good acess to river for tubing or wading. Garner State Park, near 2 hours west. Great park, on Frio river. Very popular all year, will definately need reservations. Very very busy during summer. And drive thru Sabinal is beautiful. Hondo is a neat town with lots to see. And if you stay in town I also recommend Travelers World Carefree RV Park on Roosevelt Ave. Easy access to downtown. Bus across street. Golf course next door. Happy trails.
