San Diego to Yosemite Trip

We took a weeklong trip starting with 2 nights in South Carlsbad SB, followed by an overnight at Orange Grove in Bakersfield, 4 Nights in Yosemite Valley, one night at Pine Cove at Bass Lake, and an overnight at River Run in Bakersfield. Probably could have drove thru without the Bakersfield stops, but that allowed us to leave later in the afternoon after enjoying the beach or Bass Lake.

Very nice. Great photos. We're heading west this fall / winter and will keep those parks in mind. Especially wanting to go to Yosemite! Thanks

Thanks for posting this report! Judging by the view of Vernal Falls, you must be in pretty good shape -- the hike to Nevada Falls is fairly strenuous. Well done!

What were you seeing as far as campgrounds being full?

You got lucky on the weather as it wasn't too hot up this way in the past few weeks.

It's so weird being the same age as old people.

The 3 campgrounds that I was trying to book were not allowing full capacity. Many sites were empty. We were booked at Summerdale just outside the park but we picked up Cancellations for the valley floor on the way up! They predicted cold weather and I think some people cancelled.

I am in ok shape. We hiked with someone that was having a difficult time but we just took a lot of rest breaks and took our time. We went up the Mist trail and back down on John Muir. The surprisingly long hike was the one we made to the Mariposa Grove of Sequoias. Normally you could take a shuttle right up to the grove but they shut all shuttles down. That adds about 2 miles each way and we ended up hiking 10 miles total on that day. That was suppose to be our easy day.
