Thanks folks. Appears as if there are lots of good choices.
I'm leaning towards the state park as the safest bet but Red Gate was the first campground I looked at online.
We're planning on staying 4 or 5 nights so picking the right spot is more important than if it is just an overnighter.

We have reservations at Red Gate for 4 nights in October - then heading to Hilton Head Motorhome Resort for an Entegra Rally. Couple of other Entegras planning on staying at Red Gate prior as well. Haven't been there, but has good reviews.

We stayed at Red Gate a couple of years ago and would do so again. The main CG is a big field but there's a few more private and shaded sites around back by the "Toy Barn."
If you don't want to drive into town Red Gate can arrange for the tour trolley to pick you up.
Note that Hunter Army Airfield is nearby so you'll be hearing helicopters a lot.

We stayed at Skidaway state park, one of nicest parks I've been to. Don't try to get there at night as there were poor directions but that was a few years ago.

Maritimer-
Note: The entrance road to Skidaway Island State Park is the aptly named "State Park Road" off of Route 204. It's the first left off the bridge as you head east. Our GPS thought it was the second left, which leads to a private housing development. We were able to turn around without unhooking the toad, but for a while I was not sure we'd be able to do so. They must see that a lot at the development's gatehouse!

We prefer Skidway or Hardeeville S.C. close to Savannah and easy trip to Hilton Head

We spent a week at Fort McAllister State Park in June. It is south of Savannah.
The Savannah Visitors Information Center has RV-sized parking spaces which we appreciated. Our 32'-6" class C fit easily into one. Larger class A's were parked across multiple car spaces and no one seemed to mind.

We have been to Savannah two times in the last few years, stayed at Red Gate Farms Campground. It is a country setting with good utilities and advertised as being one of the closest campgrounds to downtown. If going back I would stay there again. I suggest if you are touring downtown get on one of the tour trollies at the visitors center. You can get on and off as necessary. Go in the afternoon after 3:00 PM (your ticked covers the next day also) ride the complete route for the narrated tour the first day. The following day get on and off at points of interest, especially the river front. They provide a map of downtown.

We stayed at Hardeeville RV Park just across the border in SC. PPA park but you must be self contained - they have a laundry. Only about a 10 minute drive (maybe less) to the Visitor's Center in Savannah. Perfect for us.
