We're leaving Escondido, CA (just above San Diego) on an RV trip to Whiteman AFB, near Kansas City Mo. about mid September. We're tentatively planning to go via I-40, as it appears to be the shortest route. If any of you have any suggestions of sites worth seeing or places to stay, we would certainly appreciate your suggestions! Thank you all in advance for your input.

Albuquerque is nice. We’ve stayed at High Desert several times. Not fancy but clean and nice people. Close to town (9 miles) and similar distance to Route 66 casino. Try eating at Sadie’s or El Pinto. Nuclear museum is interesting as is Old Town.

When going through Amarillo you have to try the Big Texan steak house. Good food and a fun place.

If you are into this type of thing, visit meteor Crater between Flagstaff and Winslow, AZ. Just a few miles off I40 and there is a campground right at the exit. You could spend anywhere from 20 min to several hours depending on your level of interest. They have a museum, gift shop, a theater and of course you can go out and stand at the edge of the crater.

If you've never done this drive before, I would highly suggest taking I-15 to I-70 across Utah and Colorado rather than I-40. So much better scenery and places to stop!

1650 miles - Utah, Colorado - I-70
1608 miles - New Mexico, Texas - I-40

We drove down from Canada to Vegas a couple of years back and wanted a change of scenery on the way back, so we took I70 - so glad we did. Tons to see - huge tunnels through the mountains, split level hiway right alongside a raging river and in a mountain gorge, passing by beautiful Vail and then a big climb out of the valley, past Grand Junction, a quaint city with an awesome farmers market. Would we do I70 again? In a heart beat.

We drive from TN to CA quite often and normally take the I-40 route from TN to Flagstaff, down to Phoenix then into Southern CA on the I-10 (and vice versa).

To OP, if you have never driven the I-70, it's beautiful. Maybe go out I-70 and come back I-40?

And, if you pass through Amarillo, the BIG TEXAN Steakhouse is a must (Home of the FREE 72 oz. steak, if you can finish it)! They have a RV park down the street. They own a fleet of older Limo's and offer free pick-up and drop-off even if you are at another RV park or hotel. Nice service. We either stop for lunch or dinner depending on our timing and have stayed at their RV park many times.
