Sites near Mt. Rushmore

We are planning to return to Mt. Rushmore next year for the second time, and plan to stay much longer than the 3 days we were there before. We stayed at a KOA in Rapid City last time and found that it was really quite a distance from everything.

Can anyone suggest a good RV park/resort that is close to the actual Mt. Rushmore that is reasonably priced? We are assuming that we need to make the reservations now for next spring/summer.

We stayed at Beaver Lake Campground in Custer. We enjoyed it.

Ted,

We stayed at the State Game Lodge in Custer State Park. Nice sites. 22 miles from Mt. Rushmore via Needles which is an awesome drive but you need a toad or pickup, nothing bigger. 30 miles via normal roads. 20 miles to Crazyhorse Memorial.

We've stayed 2x at Rafter J Bar CG, about 10 miles from Mt. Rushmore. Nice CG with FHU's and nice sized sites.

Its located outside of the city of custer, we felt it was close to almost everything.

We stayed at the Buffalo Ridge RV Resort right outside of Custer. Easy ride to walk around Custer and close to Crazy Horse.

Pay the large fee at Crazy Horse and get the ride up to the face. Spectacular!

plenty of rental cars in rapid city. might find one in hill city or custer but rapud city is prolly your best bet. the Fort WeLikIt campground in custer used to have on-site rental cars.

some parks prolly have a shuttle to mt. rushmore especially for the lighting ceremony at night.

We too stayed in Game Lodge Camp Ground in Custer State Park. We also found it to be a good base camp. From Game Lodge we took Iron Mountain road to Mt Rushmore, and Needles Hwy back. Both were quite scenic and interesting, especially the tunnels. We also drove to Deadwood, visited Wind Cave NP next door to Custer State Park.

Mt. Rushmore CG's

Well thank all of you, I got some really great input and will start checking on reservations this week. I know you can find RV parks/resorts on-line but you really never know what you are getting until you get there so it is really great to hear from someone who has actually visited the site.

We like rustic so Blue Bell in CSP this year and Legion Lake last year. On getaway day at LL we had a visitor - ain’t no getting away til the big hoss says so!

Friends stay at Rafter J Bar and love it. We’ve driven through and it looks great with many types of areas available (open, near pool to way back up in the woods).
