The biggest problem with skiing Utah is that, after experiencing the great snow, the great slopes, and the relative lack of people, it ruins the experience of skiing in other places for you.

(Well, okay, it doesn't really ruin them, but they're just not as good. )

we have skied Park City and Dear Valley but never have dragged our trailer up there. best shot for us from the DFW area is Taos and Red River. no passes to go over to get there and if you stay in Eagle Nest or in the town of Taos, flat ground and less snow cover. easy drive to both areas. we try to visit both each year. also of note is free skiing at red river if you are 70 or over. Taos a much better ski area but Red River pretty good if ski free like for us.

After Skiing on the East Coast Ice for 5-6 years we headed to Utah and never came back, to ski in the East - Usually getting in 15-20 Days in Utah for over 10 years - enjoying Christmas and New Years - till the Boys headed to College (College sports started early and restricted the skiing)

Now one lives in Colorado - ski's a lot but still says greatest Snow is still in Utah!

We actually found it was cheaper to fly to Utah stay and Ski than it was to Try to find good snow on the East Coast, as it is just a matter of Luck (JMHO) to get it when you plan for it.

Remember getting Lift Tickets at 7-11 for $6.00 in Utah - those were the days - $100 + a day in Vail today - My how times have changed!

Great Memories and Great Skiing,

JMHO,

Well, then, JMHO2!

Best trips to Snowbasin were on days with a foot of new mountain snow in the early morning. We'd rent a Jeep with chains - the road up was a bit challenging - and spend all day flying up and down with no lines in the lift stations. Just empty chairs and empty gondolas. Heaven. And the snow . . . wow.

Now I want to go back.

Utah and glaciers in Austria. Great snow. New Zealand -- also amazing.. But my wife had issues with altitudes above 8,000.

Anyway, the best snow I've skied on was on a crazy little place called Snow Ridge, directly east of Lake Ontario. 100 pure lake effect fluff. It often has a moisture content ratio of 20 inches of snow to 1 inch of water. Fluffiest power you will ever ski or board. But its only 600 feet of vert. Its never crowded, but still it's a short run.

I am sure it can be done but it is hard to beat year over year conditions in the Salt Lake area. Lots of great areas to choose from.

One that is overlooked is Powder Mountain. When the conditions are good it is a lovely place to ski. Doesnt hurt that they limit ticket sales so there are no excessive lines.

Managed to ski Alta on a snow day. The road avalanched just after we got up so there were not many people on the hill. Meanwhile it was snowing 4" per hour. It was fun to powder 8 on your tracks from a previous run.

We were also there for a week. During the week cumulative snowfall was 96" of light snow.

Not skiing this winter because the wife just had a hip replacement but we will be there next season.

You are correct about lovely Powder Mtn in Utah. I just booked a flight to SLC for March to go meet my sister, staying at her daughter's house. This will be our 4th year doing this. We will spend 3-4 days skiing on PowMow, hoping for good weather

$100 a day ...the good old days! For a same day ticket now you'll have to drop over $200. Fortunately by picking up an Epic or Ikon pass and skiing a LOT the cost per day comes way down

We are leaving Maryland tomorrow to head to Steamboat, Alta, Solitude, Brighton and finally Jackson Hole. Just have to dodge that pesky winter storm on the way west.

As I think back over the years of paying for stuff - movies, amusement parks, plays, concerts, stadium tix - $200 bucks to ski all day in the mountains doesn't strike me as outrageous. Still lots of good times per buck.
