With only 6 days in CO our experience has been more on the normal side as other than 2 nights in a private CG in Buena Vista we’ve had no trouble getting into Public CGs that do not take reservations and have few if any amnesties. Many of the sites that were $10 last year are $20 this summer... not really worth it but the 50% old farts pass helps. Fortunately the newbies are looking for FHU CGs that take reservations as we have not seen any temp tags, just CO.

Since we are 2 big rigs, I made reservations in Grand Lake for next Sun-Monday... didn’t even ask about Fri-Saturday as they only had 3 open sites. Tried for the next Sun-Monday in W Yellowstone but nothing so we’ll pay to dump ($10) at Grizzly (having dry camped 5 days in the Tetons) and try for our favorite no reservations USFS CG.

I agree if you are not comfortable dry camping and winging it, this summer could be a challenge making reservations.

Good Luck in Yellowstone - It might have been one of the most Messed up Places we Visited - we did have some Luck in Victor for (yes I made the Mistake of Taking the Coach with the Toad over RT 22) not fast to say the least, Tetons and Island Park for Yellowstone - many NFS were just not open and the ones that were were only doing reservations - no walk ups. -

Pretty sure your Knowledge of the area is far superior to Mine - and you will fare well, also we were working with three units not just Two!

Keep your mask handy as there has been an Uptick in Covid, the area due to all the new Visitors.

Even will the issues we Faced, it is still an Amazing part of the Planet!

Keep in touch - How was Aspen? - Those Bells are Pretty Special also.

Bill

A warning if going to RMNP... even going to Recreation.gov 6 days before arriving and paying $27, 2PM was the earliest time slot. You can go in after 5 PM without reservations and that’s a better time for seeing the animals.

Dick,

Finding just the Opposite out here near Dino NM - we had to go to Vernal Monday for service and decided to stop in Rangely, CO - Space in all the Parks - as they are 30 miles from the Monument - and when we drove in CanyonView drive few people - easy access and a Beautiful drive.

Side note here on the Condition of the Roads in Colorado - ROUGH ROAD signs are everywhere - IMHO they should be part of the Welcome to Colorado Sign as we have NEVER driven on so many poorly Maintained roads - actually they literally are throwing everything in the Coach Everywhere. We have been driving often 20-30 miles under the speed limit to try to avoid the Bad Rides. RT 139 appears to have just been beaten to Death by Heavy Trucks and the lack of any real Maintenance is just BAD.

Back to the original story and the Covid issues - Here in Rangely they have had 21 cases in the entire county and one Death - so while the roads are Rough - it is still Beautiful and Pretty Safe! (we just left Delta County with 91 cases and 1 death, so not everyplace is the same with Covid)

Stay safe and let us know what you are seeing.......as it's just so different just about everywhere.

WY update...YES it’s CROWDED. We moved yesterday from Grand Lake (RMNP) to the Tetons staying at Hatchet USFS CG in the crowded overflow area. In 5-6 times of staying there we’ve never had to stay in overflow before. Moved this morning to Gros Ventre (318 sites) closer to Jackson at 9:30. After waiting in line for 45 minutes we lucked into 2 sites (just vacated) as at first we were directed to overflow for one night and then having to get in line again tomorrow morning as we are staying 4 nights.

Fortunately the checkin lady said another 45’ had gotten into the 38’ site. Had to raise the back up to get over the larger than normal concrete bumpers at the rear as it’s a 38’ site. 100 sites turned over and the CG was full by 11:15. Previous years I’ve come in at 2 PM and got one of the 36 sites with electric.

OP again here just about the last post as we are now in KY headed through WV then Home.

Yes, RV's are out in Full Force - CampGrounds are crowded - Covid is out there and there are many who still feel like it will not find them (Meaning they do not wear masks and they do not social distance) - Popular areas are Crowded - Reservations are needed, but not always necessary.

If you are going, best to make a reservation or Boondock - Have never seen more Temp Tags than this year

As we traveled back toward the East Coast, we have still found many CG's filled - Weekends are still Popular - Wally is still in play, though many are not allowing Over Night use, Still pays to Call, as we've been ok'd into Wally's that were said to be Closed to ON parking - We till need a Major Infrastructure Bill - while there are some Highways in good Shape Many are a Disaster.

Will report one more time when we arrive in Maryland then Likely again when we return to Colorado in September - will be interesting to see what it is like after "School Starts" in some places - IMHO man will be home schooled this year.

Thanks to all who have contributed, think this has been a help to Many,

JMHO,

Busskipper,

Enjoyed following your trip. Welcome back to Maryland.

Just got back from Rocky Gap. Surprisenly, 1st time I've ever been. Really nice. Seems as through they are intentionally keeping a lot of sites empty. Lifeguards were playing volleyball on the beach - without masks.

I just returned from a big circle (Ark, MO, IL, MO again, KS, CO, UT, NV, AZ, NM,) and finally Texas.
What I saw were the locals in the rural areas that mostly didn't wear masks vs the urban areas where I saw more people with masks and distancing.
I didn't have reservations with the exception of Lake City,CO.
I stayed in Vegas and the park had plenty of room. (Son in military there)
All meals prepared in or outside of coach. No public restrooms, limited trips to grocery store. Stayed away from crowds in places like Pagosa Spgs.

We're waiting on next week and will be headed back up towards CO and then the Tetons.

Travel safe, Be smart, take precautions when needed.
This virus is not a joke. I don't feel any less safe traveling this way versus staying home.

Just arrived yesterday at Devils Tower. It is extremely crowded here with many Sturgis bike rally attendees. The line at 2 to get into the monument was more than a mile long. No one here is wearing a mask and in stores or other establishments social distance is impossible. (Based upon my experience trying to check in at the RV park. In normal times, we’d avoid the restaurants because of the crowds, but with virus concerns, we will have to. We’ll check out the tower and trails today.

The KOA park itself is open enough to keep distance and it’s not completely full. But the store to check is is crazy crowded.
