We started our 5 week trip with the eclipse. Stood on top of a Nebraska sand hill near Stapleton and prayed the patch of blue sky would win over the big cloud as both edged closer and closer to the partially covered sun.
Shortly before totality, the blue sky won and a cheer went up from the 100 or so others sharing our hill top.
I'm guessing the unobstructed, 360 degree view of farmland around us is why we didn't get as dark as some of the TV shots I saw later. Instead, it darkened like twilight, the wind picked up, the temperature dropped, and a pastel sunset encircled us along the horizon.
The souvenir t-shirt the enterprising farmer (on whose land we standing) had made shows the white outline of the U.S. with a star for Stapleton and says, "I was Nowhere." Maybe, but I felt like was I was somewhere special, seeing something that made this 68-year-old want to be around in 7 years to see it again.
Always wanted to check out Texas in April.
