Hamlin Beach State Park was one of our favorite campgrounds when we were camping with our two sons. There is great bicycling, a nice beach, nature trail and back then, some good rec programs for kids (during the summer). It wasn't that far from where we lived in Wilson, NY and some of our best stories about family camping took place at Hamlin Beach SP. I'd recommend it highly for anyone traveling in New York.

If you have something big, be cautious about Rogers Rock State Park. It's navigable, but just. Our site was difficult to get into and out of, and nowhere near level. The ground was so soft that some of Roger's Rocks served to fill the holes left by the leveling jacks before trying again...twice...to level the coach. Fortunately, Roger has lots of rocks. There *were* better sites for us there, but if you have never been, ask a lot of questions. Or, stay at the nearby private RV park, where the sites are easy to get in and out of and pretty level. From that base, scout RR and see where you'd want to be and which sites just won't work.

The area is great, though. Fort Ticonderoga and the Star Trek exhibit alone are worth the stop.

I fully agree, we love it there. Just make sure you're using an RV or truck type GPS for routes if you have a big rig. The Lake Ontario State Parkway has some low overpasses...some under 11 feet. Not a huge deal as there are side roads that get you on the parkway just before the park. But, definitely need to understand that beforehand.
