We are planning a spring trip to Hilton Head Island and will spend a couple of weeks exploring the low country and that area. I was looking for somewhere else to go as we start to work our way back to New England. I was looking at the Ashville area but since we have our dog with us many of the sights will be off limits. We have already done the Blue Ridge Parkway on a prior trip and we live right near the beach so spending time at the beaches wouldn't be our first choice.

Looking for suggestions of places to visit or things to do in either South or North Carolina where we can include the dog.

From my perspective, if you take mountains and beaches out of the equation, there isn't much to talk about.

Having said that, I have heard good things about Mt Airy, NC...home of Mayberry.

Check out Hot Springs NC Its a small town and has a campground that sits along the French Broad river. They have 50amp drive through sites. The down side is it is all sand and you will track it into your camper. You will find a lot of small hiking trails in the area and the AP trail goes right down the main street in town. (the only street) Its a good place to get away from it all. White water rafting, hiking, bike riding and spas all with in walking distance. We go camping here a couple times a year and visit it monthly. This is about 30 minutes from Asheville area.

We live in Maggie Valley and love the area. Great campground right down the road from us and it's on a really nice stream.

You are close to Asheville and Cherokee for day trips.

Check out the Brevard NC area, there is Dupont Forest with plenty of hiking and waterfalls and pet friendly. Our dog loves to hike the forest. We stay at Black Forest Family Campground, pet friendly. This is about an hour south of Asheville and lots of cool little areas to explore all around there.

I you are a member of the MOOSE,, Ashville has a nice lodge,, Middle of basically nothing but it is a nice lodge,, Several camp sites, 2 of them have Sewer connections,,, if, that is, they can find them.

Thanks for the tips, I will investigate them further. Waynesville looks like a nice little town with shopping, my wife will like that!!

New bern,NC is a really nice smaller town to visit. Really nice KOA there with sites very close to Nuese river. Wilmington is also a good place to visit.

Savanna and Charleston both have a lot to see.

X2. We have driven this route a few times from Ashville to KY, and camped in Hot Springs last year. It's a nice diversion from the interstate. The road from Ashville to Hot Springs is kinda hilly & twisty, but not a real problem. There is also a nice restaurant within walking distance.

If you get to Ashville, the Biltmore house is worth a visit: biltmore house asheville nc

If you want to entertain the dog, check out Four Paws Kingdom in Rutherfordton NC. It is a great dog-centric RV campground (children under 12 not allowed.) Hiking, swimming for dogs, very large fenced off-leash areas.

From there, pick up I-77 to I-81 North - much nicer than the coastal route north.

If you end up driving up I-26 to the Ashville area plan a couple of days to stop and visit us. Assuming we're there we'll get you out on the boat, and yes, the dog can come too.
