South rim of Grand Canyon with grandkids
Thinking of staying in the KOA in Williams at I-40 and hywy 64. Kids will want the pool.
64/180 do not seem to be a great road for a 36' rv and toad. Yes? No?
Appears to be an hour to the south rim from Williams.. Yes?

64 is an excellent road for an RV - straight as an arrow and boring. Yes, it's a long drive from Williams. I would highly advise that you stay at Trailer Village (full hookups) IN the park itself for the best overall experience. The free shuttle stops right outside the campground and you can ride it all day long getting off whenever you want. You're close to all the restaurants, gift shops, the easy Rim Trail and most importantly, the wonderful Ranger programs.

Yes, when we go up, we go towedless. No need with the great shuttle service.

Early bird gets the worm. I know a lot of folks like to free wheel WRT reservations...but...if this first season of doing major National Parks is any indication...read the on line instructions for each park (and I mean each park, because they have different reservation policies and approaches). And on the day reservations open, or the period in advance that they allow reservations, THAT is the day you need to make reservations. Same generally applies to the nicer parks in vicinity of the parks. And if you are trying during June to August that advice triples!

We just got back from the canyon last week. Go early, by noon parking is scarce. We left the MH in Williams and just drove the car. Easier to get around with all the traffic. They are right about the shuttle service. Just walk as far as you want down the trails and then catch the shuttle bus back to your origin. The only reason we missed the MH was for lunch. Pack a bag. Eateries are not that plentiful and expensive.....$9.00 for a ham sandwich. Have fun and enjoy the scenery!

Williams is a great base camp. We were just there 2 weeks ago. I highly recommend Williams Circle of Pines KOA, especial with kids (family). Great, large indoor heated pool. Bike area (with rentals), miniature golf, two large clean playgrounds, lots of trees and it feels like forest camping. Don't miss Bearazona, just a few miles away. A drive through animal park, we spent a good 5 hours there, driving through twice (you only pay once) and watching the bears and buffalo walk up to the car. The Grand Canyon Deer Park, (also one exit away) was fantastic for our 5 year old twin grandchildren. We enjoyed it too, but probably best for pre or early teens at the most. The Grand Canyon in a 60 mile (1 hr) drive from Williams. Easy straight, fast, two lane road with nothing much in between...high desert plains. The 5 year olds didn't comprehend the Grand Canyon, but had fun running around. If the kids have studied geology (volcanos and such) in school, Crater of the Sun Park is a good stop, just outside Flagstaff...National Park with a great ranger station and paved hiking trail. We were very disappointed with Meteor Crater...a private display, which for a bunch of money lets you look into the crater. Rob's Steak House in Williams gets an honorable mention. Nice people, food was acceptable, probably great for Williams. If your in to an out to dinner, I'd recommend it. As for the 64/180, it is a great road. However, it is mostly two lane, not too many passing areas...if you are driving it to the Grand Canyon you will have no trouble, if you are then heading east along the rim you will be pressed by traffic wishing to get by. Parking at the Canyon Rim is plentiful but can be difficult for an RV. Best to leave the rig at base and take the toad. We wanted extra room so we rented a Van from I-40 Fleet Rentals. It was delivered to the KOA before we arrived and we just left the keys when we left. Great company, couldn't have made it easier. That said, the clean, good running van had 170,000 miles on it. But it served us well, so no complaints here.
Enjoy every minute, and happy trails.

For another Grand Canyon experience ride the train to/from the park if you stay in Williams.

Just got back from there with our 2 grandsons (6&9) our first camping trip with them. Here's what we learned:
1. They get bored very quickly.
2. They don't think it's a hike if the trail is paved
3. Even when a subject interests them, they have the attention span of a gnat.
4. They think the world is ending if there is no wifi
5. They are too short to ride the mules into the canyon
What we would do differently if we took them again.
1. We'd stay at the KOA in Williams where there are additional activities.
2. We'd take the train one day for an adventure
3. We'd do something other than the canyon one day
4. We'd make sure there is wifi
