We were there toward the middle of May last year and the weather was sort of cool to cold. A jacket really felt good - especially when the wind was blowing out of the west. We had snow in the higher elevations in the hills around Sylvan Lake in Custer SP. We will find little going on in Sturgis at that time of year. The Knuckle Saloon serves some great food and the atmosphere is pure biker. There will be a bunch of bargain T shirts at the Harley dealer. Many of the businesses in town are closed. Worth the trip? Definitely Worth the trip in August? Questionable unless you are hard core into motorcyles, lots and lots of motorcycles.
We aren't looking for the biker aspect of the area, but rather, we are meeting family to tour the area including Mt Rushmore, Badlands, Deadwood, and the Black Hills.
There are many campgrounds all thru the Blk Hills as I'm sure you are aware. Most better than No Name City. Rafter J, most will say, and I agree , is one of the best. Going in May you will have many great campgrounds to chose from in all parts of the hills. You may want to move around some. Enjoy
