There are a few RV parks in the area, you can also stay at the State and County Parks. If you are Boondocking there are places to camp around Mt Hood. It just really depends on what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend.
What is your reason for visiting, how do you normally camp and what are you looking to pay? Do you mind moving every couple of weeks so you can get the feel of the different areas surrounding Portland or are you looking to stay in one place?
Happy to help with an extensive list of Oregon Camping just let me know what you are looking for in a spot.

Two of the local Vancouver ones are full of long term. Jantzen Beach RV Park just across the river off I-5 usually has places open but lots of traffic on the freeway at commute times.

Any State campground you are limited to two weeks stays. You can stay 14 consecutive nights in a regular campsite, yurt or cabin in a single campground, and may return after spending at least three nights out of the park (it can be another state park campground; in fact, we recommend you DO select another state park campground). The maximum time allowed within any campground is 14 nights within any 17-night period. The maximum stay for hiker/biker sites is 3 consecutive days in a 7 day period, per campground.

Jantzen beach, and there is Columbia river RV park a bit east of there on Marine drive. Both of these parks are on the airport flight path, so can be noisy. Also you could go to one of the parks east Portland/Fairview and Sandy Riverfront in Troutdale. Portland Fairview is right next to the train tracks, so csn be noisy. Sandy riverfront is quieter, a bit smaller and less than 5 mintes drive from a day use state park that has an off leash dog area. What part of town are you going to be working? From east of town you would want to drive 15 minutes to Gresham to get Max into downtown. From Jantzen beach would be less than 5 mintes drive to the expo center Max station.

Portland Fairview RV Park might be a choice. We've stayed there a few times when visiting family for a few weeks. Sites are not huge and it is a bit out of town on the east side, but easy access to freeways. We've also stayed in Salem at Hee-Hee-Ilahee and commuted to Portland. If the commute is acceptable, I'd stay there.
We were not happy at Columbia River RV Park; end of the PDX runway and difficult to get to anyplace.

Last December, we stayed 5 nights at the Jantzen RV Park. We only stayed there because it was convenient to our daughter's house and she was having a baby. The office people were very nice and helpful, however, the showers were very upsetting- slimy and had not really been cleaned or maintained. The only reason we used them was due to the fact that our BRAND NEW travel trailer had a defective part that prevented our hot water heater from working. AND this was a VERY cold December. The showers turned us off to this RV Park- however, we try to stay in State and National Park campgrounds.
P.S. We have stayed in a couple of Oregon State Parks and were very impressed. Milo McIver State Park is located by the Clackamas River and is lovely. (On the East side of Portland)

I'll be working in Beaverton but don't mind a commute. I like the idea of staying down the valley in Salem.

We lived in Beaverton for 30 years. You will have a minimum of a one hour commute each way from Salem.

Also, please know that if you commute from Vancouver or Jantzen Beach, it will be at least 1.5 hours, depending on the time of day. Portland has grown SO much that driving anywhere during the day is a nightmare.
