Sun Life RV Resort Mesa AZ

We've been invited to meet up with friends at Sun Life RV resort in Mesa AZ next February for the month. Everything I've been able to find about this RV resort suggests it's mostly a mobile home park with a few RV spots in an asphalt jungle. Frankly, the whole place looks like an institutionalized seniors home where your daily activities are pre-programmed. I'm sure I'm wrong, but ya know, first impressions...... Not too concerned with the monthly cost with electricity and trash collection fee being extra. Normally we're boondocking somewhere and occasionally use state/federal/provincial parks or an out of the way RV park so it will be a new experience for sure.

Has anyone stayed here? What were your impressions? What's the good, the bad or ugly? Would you go back? Why or why not?

All the RV parks in the greater Phoenix area, including Mesa, have Park Model permanent trailers.

I agree with you that public parks and boondocking are much more pleasant.

What about you staying somewhere else and meet up with your friends from time to time?

I really think you'd like any of the Maricopa County Parks in that area. We sure do.

Usery, McDowell Mtn., Cave Creek, White Mtn., Lake Pleasant are favorites of ours.

We also absolutely love Lost Dutchman State Park in Apache Jct. on the east border of Mesa. Absolutely gorgeous sites, scenery and hiking. We volunteered there.

Unfortunately, being public parks there's a 2-week limit but you could move between Lost Dutchman and Usery (the closest to Sun Life) to give you different views and hiking options.

if you mean the Sun Life Vacation Resort on East University in Mesa then yes, we were there between Feb 15 and April 29. it is a 55+ resort so yes it has lots of seniors. roughly 700 spaces with the majority being park models. this us a CalAm park which means you have access to the amenities at all of the other CalAm parks.

asphalt streets. no shade to speak of which makes it easy if you have a sat. dish. this is the desert. full hook ups, electric, sewer and garbage are billed monthly. each site has a garbage and recycle cart. garbage is picked up weekly, recycling every other week. cable TV hookup is avaialable ($$). each RV space has a gravel spot for your RV adjacent to a concrete patio for another vehicle, grill, loungers, etc. considering the type of parl i
think the spacing is not bad. virtually all of the spaces have a palm tree in front. street noise is there but you’re gonna get that pretty much anywhere in town.

lots of activuties, most planned (scheduled). pickle ball and tennis courts, golf putting and driviing into a net, pool, deck (with live music), bar, food (snacks to dinner), library, post office, billiards, crafts, woodworking, live shows (some at other CalAm parks...we saw the Beach Boys and 3 Dog Night). partake in all, some or none...your call. two nice doggie parks as well. roughly 2/3 of the spaces are pet friendly.

we’ve been going to Mesa each winter/spring for ~25-yrs initially for a few weeks for spring training but now for 2-monts since we retired. this was our first year at this park. what we liked most was the people. most were friendly and would return a greeting or a wave. that was not always the case at the park we had been using. most, not all, of the snowbird parks in the valley are huge...1500 or even 2000 spaces. Sun Life is among the smallest and i think that has a lot to do with the friendliness of the residents.

the park is fenced with one entrance and two exits. the entrance is “guarded” meaning there is someone there (part tine) to direct visitors, tradesmen etc. no gate or key card needed to enter or exit. the extra exit IS gated but is motion activated.

5-min drive to 4 or 5 grocers, maybe a few minutes more to a CVS or Walgreens. a Wally Neighborhood Market is across the street from the entrance as is gas/diesel. an enclosed mall is 10-12 minutes, two vetetanarian clinics are 3-5 minutes. Banner hospital is maybe 10-minutes. walk-in clinics are everywhere.

we are reserved again for next Feb-March. assuming the current panic is over we’ll be there. happy to answer any questions.

this is a link to a video i made of our stay for familly and friends.

at the rear of the site. if you look closely at the top photo you'll see the electrical post. the water connection cannot be seen as it is behind the MH. the sewer connection is at the rear but towards to right.

twogypsies, thank you for sharing your favorites. That sparked an idea. I think what might work for us is to spend a couple of days with our friends at Sun Life, then re locate to one of the locations you listed. We can easily drive back to Sun Life to visit.

rk911, thank you for sharing your excellent video and photos, it was very informative. The RV spots looked a lot better than we had imagined. DW really likes your floor plan too! If this plan works out for next March, we'll look for you to say hello.

The great information you both provided is much appreciated!
