Considering that the OP stated "probably San Antonio/Austin area but I'm not totally firm on that" and the RGV had already been suggested, I didn't think suggesting Port Aransas was out of bounds. IMHO there's a big difference between the OP and a statement like "tell me places to stay in..." I can see your comment if I had suggested Arizona, but other locations in TX seemed totally appropriate to me.

My wife and I stop at Port Aransas and like it a lot. We're usually staying in Rock port for a couple of weeks in the fall and again in the spring, and every day drive to Port Aransas. Can stay in Rock Port for $10. A day. Then we head south to Tropic Winds in Harlingen Tx for the winter under Thousand Trails. We stay there for $299. A month thru the winter. When we take the ferry over to the island at Port Aranasa we like seeing the gulls, and theres usually porpoises playing in the water. Tx. Doesn't mine us bringing our dogs to the beach either. We tried Florida...to expensive. They don't like dogs. So, we go to Tx. Every winter. And Tropic Winds is a very nice place to winter! Lots to do, and see. We go to So.Padre while we're there.

Garner State Park just west of San Antonio. It's like an Oasis with a beautiful crystal clear river for floating and swimming. Beautiful cliffs and old oaks.
