The Spectacle: Quartzsite in the Eyes of a Newbie

An excerpt from my new blog post:

Quartzsite, for those of you that may not know, is a little town in southwestern Arizona. Among other things it is home to an RV show that takes place about the middle of January for some 10 days.

From the home page of the show's web site: "Every January something happens that is hard to believe, unless you have seen it! According to the Arizona Highway Department, as many as 750,000 to 1,000,000 people, mostly in RV’s, converge on this sleepy little desert town, located just 20 miles east of the California border on Interstate 10, for the rock, gem and mineral shows, plus numerous flea markets and the Quartzsite Sports, Vacation & RV Show. This phenomenon started over 40 years ago and is now billed as “The Largest Gathering Of RVers in the World”..." I couldn't have said it better myself. That's why I quoted the show's site! Ha!

The full report along with all the other stuff from my free, award winning blog is at RussOnTheRoad. If you like it sign up for free email notices when I make new posts. Look for the Follow Russ text entry field. Oh, and I made up the part about award winning. It could happen though! LOL.

I didn't arrive until the 22nd, for the last few days of the show. It may have been windy earlier but it's been beautiful while I've been here. Cool nights in the 40s, days in the upper 60s, lower 70s, mostly sunny.

There was one day of winds in the last week. And by standards of years gone by and the desert as a whole it was mild. A front went through, that's what happens. A few awning pulled in and no fire to sit by that evening.

Arrived early Wed. morning with hopes of avoiding the crowd, winds picked up around 10:30 and the dust and blowing sand, chased everyone inside, the big tent. Not the biggest crowd I've seen in there but close. Nothing new inside, and you have to know your prices. If they took out all the non RVing related items there would be a whole lot more room. The isle width layout is a joke, center isle could be narrowed 4' and each of the outer isle widened by 2' to give you a chance to move around , or stop and look, without getting pushed along.
Spent more on gas driving the 55 miles to get there, and breakfast, than I did at the show. Arrived back at my RV by 1:30, showered and had beer in hand by 2.

We've been there a half dozen times but the main reason was a gathering of 100 of our closest friends. We all stay in one area and have pot lucks, 4x4 outings, group 'seminars' on different topics, walks, geocaching, etc. We typically go into town perhaps once in two weeks but rarely find anything to purchase.

There are many reasons folks go there and it's not all because of the shopping. There are many RV groups, RV manufacturer groups, specialized groups like Ham radios, etc. I would say that's why the majority of folks go there - just to gather with certain groups.

If it's on your bucket list, then do go. Some return and some don't.

You won't catch me lolly gagging around either when there's a beer to be had. LOL.
