Trailer Length

Hello all,

Brand new to the forum. My wife and I have secured a campsite in a Cap Cod park. The campground states 24' max for trailer length.

We haven't even purchased a trailer yet.

My question is, How stricked are most campgrounds on the lenght of the trailer? I see some 24 foot trailers for sale but, I know they will be a little longer because the stated size is usually smaller than the actual tongue to bumper length.

If anyone has specifically ever stayed at the Sun Retreats Cap Cod campground, are they going to be putting a tape measure to my trailer?

Thanks for any advice! This will help us in choosing our trailer over the next couple months.

Can you get a larger site just in case?

Most parks dont check. But do your homework and make aure you will fit, e.g. park website photos, aerial views, campsite reviews.

I have a Grand Design 22RBE. The "box" is 22 feet long. That's what the length that the campground will use as to whether or not to allow you to camp in their campground...and you're usually OK.

However, my trailer's actual measurement from the trailer ball to the back bumper is 26' long. There are times where knowing that measurement will save you grief.

Do you really want to limit the size of the trailer just because of this one campground?

I haven't experienced a campground that was too strict about trailer lengths. That said - if it will just fit in the space because it is so long, you may end up having to park the TV in a remote space - which can be a pain.

Never heard of booking spots before buying the RV. Sounds like it could be an ingenious way to prevent the significant other from upsizing when touring RVs on the lot.

Good suggestion. For a measurement tool I use Google Earth Pro which has a measuring function in the Tools section of the menu bar. Once you get an aerial image of the park, you can use your curser to determine the length of any campsite.

Been doing the RV thing for 14-15 years and never been asked to verify my RV size when showing up with a reservation. Only time I get asked is when arriving without a reservation and the staff obviously needed to know so they could find a site for me.

As far as whether an RV will fit I usually go to Campsite Photos or Google Earth to get a different perspective.

Many times you can hang the rear of the RV over the site barrier and get another 3-5'. Then park the tow vehicle at an angle.

The biggest obstacle is getting into the site as some are at 90* angles off narrow heavily vegetated/tree'd roads.

Now most trailers are measured for overall length, including hitch.
20 feet will fit almost everywhere.
24 feet will fit in almost all trailer spaces.
29 feet will fit in a lot of trailer spaces.

Unfortunately No.

This is primarily the reason I am asking. The campground says that all sites are 24 feet. But it looks like there may be larger trailers in the campground from Google Maps. But it's not possible to know for certain.

You can sometimes tell from the website how serious they are about length. One place we have on the list for this summer asked for measurements from the back of the trailer to the front of the tow vehicle . If worried I would call. We had one place last year we called just to check and it was ok.

All campgrounds will expect that the trailer will not protrude into the roadway. You may encounter obstacles behind such as trees that prevent overhanging the site, and a few private campgrounds do not allow the RV to overhang the site.

Campground site dimensions are many times way off. Private campgrounds are more likely to be accurate, many public campgrounds will specify a length and the site will be twice as deep when you get there, its a real crap shoot. As already mentioned, a site may be very deep but due to angle to the roadway, and trees, rocks, ditches, etc, you may not be able to get a long trailer in it. No ones gonna measure your trailer, but it had better fit in the site by their rules.

Cool, I didn't know Google Earth had the measurement feature. It is also available in the free version.

New England CGs

The CGs in New England were mostly built as the Pilgrims landed on our shores.
Don't presume anything regarding length, call the park.
They also have short seasons.
