Distance should not be the issue, especially running 1/2 Marathons - Heat - more than likely is what you want to think about - as the down is not nearly as bad as the UP :-) , so hope for a cooler, cloudy day and go for it.
Camera is important as everything is different from every direction - at all times during the day - not to mention Water.

Where/What, else do you plan to go/see along the way from NJ?
We always suggest to people to try to take the time to see the "Other Side" - North Rim - if you do then Page/Antelope Canyon/Horse Shoe/Canyon de Chelly/Monument Valley/Mexican Hat/Chaco Canyon - So many state parks, and Native American spots to see.
Lake Powell - All of Utah? You are prepared for the Heat?
Colorado? San Juan's? Collegiates? Maroon Bells? just to name a few.
