in the summer of '21 we found I-80 between I-355 and Cheyenne, with a few scattered exceptions, to be a pretty decent road. no tolls on that stretch but if you're starting further east there is a toll on WB 80/294 a bit west of the Indiana/Illinois border. if you have no mountain driving experience you might want to pick up a copy of the Mountain West Driving Directory. . the climb between the Nebraska border and Cheyenne is gradualamd EZ.

Lots of campgrounds along and near the interstate in Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming. Also one right at the Nebraska-Wyoming line. The uphill actually starts shortly after I 76 splits off from I 80 west of Ogallala. A long, steady uphill to the high plains of the panhandle. Thereafter a more gradual uphill to Cheyenne. Sections were wash board bumpy but not long stretches.
