Upper Peninsula MI Trip
Hello all.. last year I put a post on for advice on going on a trip to South Dakota ...things to see and stuff not to miss! We got such great response with so much valuable information from those who shared their trip itineraries with us. Thank you!
This year we would like to conquer the upper Peninsula of MI does anyone have an itinerary on places not to be missed? The best rv parks that handle big rigs?the best route from Florida? What to see and experience? We love hiking and paddle boarding. And history and of course food! Would-appreciate any and all thoughts and advice on visiting this beautiful area. We can spend as much as 2 months trapping around
Thank you all in advance

Pictured Rocks in Munising and Tahquamenon Falls on the eastern end of the UP are great places to visit. We stayed at the Jack Pine Lodge & RV which is about half way between Manistique and Munising. No problem accommodating our 40' coach with toad. It's a small, secluded park in the middle of nowhere but it's a nice place to stay and a convenient drive to some of the sight seeing in the area. Cell service is limited and satellite can be hard to obtain except from certain sites. The restaurant at the entrance has pretty good food at a reasonable price.

Sault Ste. Marie start or end there. Pick Hwy 28 or Hwy 2 travel east or west stopping every 50-75 miles for a couple days, explore out from your stop

I expect you will end up on I-75 by the time you get to Ohio. As you approach Michigan, exit 75 south of Toledo and take I-475 heading west (left lane exit) that will connect to US-23 Follow 23 north until you rejoin I-75 south of Flint. That route is shorter and has much better roads.
You'll go by the big Cabella's at Dundee if that interests you.
Afternoon rush hour on 23 thru Ann Arbor is pretty heavy, but generally moves well.
Also on your way north is Frankenmouth. German flavor town with HUGE Christmas store. Two big restaurants in town are known for chicken dinners - its a popular get-away spot. Has a campground as a way point on your way north or south.
Next up is Pinconning which has a popular cheese store, lots of folks stop on their way by.
In the UP stop in at the Hilltop Family Restaurant in L' Anse. Some of the best cinnamon rolls you will find anywhere. At 1lb. each, you'll need to do some hiking to burn off the calories!
An off the wall spot I found interesting is Lakenenland. Outdoor sculpture park with the art made from scrap iron. 15 miles east of Marquette on M-28. Lakenenland
Enjoy your trip.

We’ll be following this thread. The end of August we will leave North Carolina for the UP. We’ll visit friends and family in the Akron area, then to the Henry Ford in Dearborn. From there to Mackinaw City a visit to Mackinac Island then to Sault Saints Marie. From there southwest to Muskegon for the Hoots get together. A visit to Nappanee and then home. Like the OP we will appreciate all suggestions and comments.

Depends on your interests.
- Marquette has some historical sites and mirco breweries.
- Houghton Hancock has history in mining, the Keweena Peninsula is a scenic drive.
- Porcupine Mountains are unique, you can drive up to a overlook and see the Lake of the Clouds.
- Ironwood and the surrounding area has a mining history. Copper Peak is also something to see, it's a Ski Flying Hill.
- West of there, although in Wisconsin, is the Apostle Islands

In St Ignace, stay at Tiki RV (Passport America discount). They have a couple of sites (85 & 86) on the edge of a hill overlooking the bay, great for a MH large window view. Free shuttles to local Kewadin indian casino which also has RV camping on site. Smoked salmon, pasties, and Mackinaw Island fudge ice cream are all to be tried.
In Sault Ste. Marie, stay at Aune Osborn City CG (WE only, dump station and laundry machines) and get a site on the water to watch the close ships go by. If you want to get a taste of wild Canada, take the Agawa Canyon RR day tour for a 115 mile trip into the North woods.
In Marquette, stay at Ojibwa Casino. They have 7 free wooded RV sites w/WE. They were revamping the RV sites last fall, so it's best to call them for an update.
Third weekend in August is the (near Traverse City) Buckley Steam Engine/Tractor show with RV camp sites. One of the largest antique engine shows in the country, I haven't missed one in 20+ years.
Ludington State Park if you like sand dune beaches on Lake Michigan.

I am going to post this so I get notices when someone leaves a comment. We are going to the wife's class reunion in Minnesota in September and then on thru Wisconsin and the UP. Did this a few years ago and stopped at St. Ignes. Did the Mackinac Island thing but then went into Canada and across to New England. This time we will start at St. Ignes again but then want to head south thru the state and stop and see things. Hopefully the fall colors will be starting.

I have been to the UP many times over the years. Posts above offer good suggestions.
You will need warm clothes and lots of bug spray. We were there some years ago over July 4 holiday. I left a bowl of water outside over night and found a thin layer of ice in the morning. Black flies and mosquitoes can be merciless, depending on time of year and rainfall.

We did it a couple of years ago up the eastern side and down the western side. Head up to Whitefish Point and the maritime museum. Lots about the great lakes ships and the Edmund Fitzgerald. Also don't miss out on the cherries. We ate our way thru cherries, cherry pie, cherries and vanilla ice cream, you get the picture. Of course we did pasties and anything else local we could find. Enjoy.
