On the west side, it’s a nice drive up to Polebridge (but not sure if / how the fires last year affected the area) and grab something to eat at the bakery.

From there, you could go up to Lake McDondald and enjoy the “beach” area and incredible views. However, I would sugggest that you have at toad with at least some reasonable ground clearance (a Subaru for instance) as the road between the ranger station and the lake is “un-improved” at best.

We visited Glacier many decades ago and dined at all of the lodges
Also, crossed into Canada and enjoyed Waterton park and the town. There is a RV campground within walking distance. Just don't expect a site on Canada Day weekend.

Wishing to head to Glacier National park in early Aug. 2019 Driving our 37' Tradewinds motorhome.
Looking for some good advise on campgrounds with fly fishing near by. Vistas and nature viewing. Good food also a big plus with me.

If you have time, Banff National Park, Lake Louise, and Jasper NP in Canada are beautiful!!!

Hi JimmyJ,
Consider staying at St. Mary on the East side of Glacier. Contact the ranger station (East side) for the fishing locations. There are several local restaurants that serve very good food. At the turn off for the Grinnell Glacier trail there is a restaurant that serves an outstanding steak dinner. I stay at the KOA St. Mary. Excellent mountain views from your coach or site.

We visited GNP and YNP last year. Take the free shuttle ride up to Logan Pass. Here is a 4 min video we took: Both are great but I agree YNP will be better. But keep in mind, without a scooter or something, some of the YNP sites are a walk to see. 1/4 to 1/2 mile from the parking lot. Altho, they are ADA friendly. We failed to make reservation and barely found a place at the North end of YNP called Rocky Mountain RV Park & Cabins. Super nice owners and very close to the North entrance. You'll go under the arch here. Both places are must do's but campgrounds cost will be higher then normal!

Thank You All

Hubs and I are home now after 94 days in Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, South Dakota and North Dakota (FMCA rally in Minot).

Maybe I should add Arkansas too since we spent 12 hours there on the side of the road - on a Sunday when no one works - because serpentine belt shredded when dash AC compressor locked up. And believe it or not, even tho there were other "glitches" (like taking our 35-ft gasser with toad thru the 11,100-ft Eisenhower Tunnel doing all of 12 mph at the top, Vail pass was slightly easier), this was as bad as it got!

But in any event, I want to thank everyone for the many varied and wonderful suggestions here. We had a marvelous time and even managed to get a 1+-mile walk/hike in in Glacier as well as a 3.3-mile, +700 ft hike/climb (a feat that was actually in response to a perceived challenge) - this one took us 5.5 hrs and had everyone that passed us was worried, many offering to stay with us until we got back to our car - what great folks in the Coeur d'Alene area!

Thanks again to all.

Thanks for returning with an update. Wish more would do so. It sounds like you had a great trip in spite of the mishaps. Congratulations on the hikes! Elevation makes them more difficult if you're not used to it.
