It you don't have a golf cart, Bicycles are a fun thing to have. We rode 52 miles on bikes our last trip to Ft. Wilderness.

If you are spending a week you can leave your car home and rent a golf cart. We go 4-5 times a year and rarely go to a park. Our grandkids love to just drive around on the golf carts and look at all the different rv's. Its called looping. Just driving around the park and seeing all the sites. You can spend the afternoon at the pool. They have activities from trivia contests and arts and crafts to dance contests and simon sez. In the evenings you can go to the campfire with Chip and Dale for a sing along and then watch a Disney Movie under the stars. After that you get on your golf cart and go down to the beach and watch the Fireworks and then the Electical Parade on the water. You can find more information on a web site called FortFiends.net. I found that the only problem with Fort Wilderness is that it will spoil you. You will always be comparing other places to the fort and they may come close but not often. We will be there the end of August and then again in the middle of October.

A few more suggestions. Bring lots of bottled water. September is still hot in FL and Buying it at the Trading Post will be very expensive. Make sure you pack all the food and drinks you think you will need. Everything at the TP is expensive but it will be there if you forget something. Naps are important and the Magic Kingdom is really cool at night. The buffet at the Trails End is good but don't expect to pay Golden Corral prices. Their Fried Chicken meal to go is excellent and reasonable for what you get but the pizza to go is of the same quality you can find in any school cafeteria. Take the boats one day or night and go to the Contemporay Resort and catch the monorail to some of the other resorts to check them out. On the way home you will be content in the knowledge that you won the best grand parents ever contest, if there is such a thing.

You can rent a golf cart at the trading post for the week, but they are expensive and sell out often. There are other companies off site that rent golf carts and will deliver. I'm not sure how to find the off site vendors other than the Internet. If your kids can ride bikes they have fantastic bike trails and bikes are easier to secure in a small space. The flip side of bikes is during the afternoon in Florida you can get caught in a monster summer downpour. Sometimes the golf cart parking spots are full at the ferry and bus stops. I recommend tow your car and rent a golf cart....just don't count how many dollars per day you are spending or you'll spoil your fun.

We were there a couple months ago in 1500 loop right by a bus stop, just two adults dependent on Disney transportation, and had a marvelous time. To add to what's already been written:
1) Internet: We had no WiFi signal so I borrowed one of their free router kits. Problem: it's an ethernet cable modem you connect to your site cable (a splitter and extra cables are all in the kit). Bring your own WiFi router if you're devices are all wireless.
2) Bikes: Bring 'em if you got 'em. They do have rentals but they're only day by day and have to be brought back by closing time (6pm? I forget).
3) You can rent a golf cart on-site or there are cheaper off-park outfits that will deliver a cart to the campground. But as said, Disney transport will get you everywhere by bus, boat or monorail. Bring a little patience.

Just came back - were long time AP holders and stay on property a couple of times a year. But this was our first Fort experience with our 1 YO MH. In short, the lack of wifi baffles me! Disney is so wired at the other resorts it makes no sense that wifi is so poor given that you pay more for a campsite than you do at a value resort.

Off site cart rental is a hassle. On site is easy and cost more than renting a car elsewhere. If you think you want to go off property, consider booking in advance with Almo / National. They will pick you up and drop you off from your resort. 2 pick up points: Car Care Center at MK and Dolphin Hotel at EPCOT. Pricey even when booked in advance.

All of the other advise noted here is solid. Book your dining reservations early, get the Disney APP, drink lots of bottled water, be patient, expect rain, don't think twice about comparing prices out side of Disney to the rest of the world.

If you want to really understand how complete things are, read about The Redi Creek Improvement District. It's Disney's own government which creates the municipal support for the operation. It's like no other place.

Went down in June. The golf cart at Disney was more expensive than the rental car. With all of that said, it was still a wonderful and magical place.
