West Virginia help

We're taking our granddaughters on a trip in August. Were originally going to Michigan but decided to reduce fuel costs and now would like to stick closer to home. West Virginia is a nice state fairly close.

Girls are 13 and 15 and would love to show them some caverns and local history.

We would appreciate any recommendations on things to see and where to stay. Love to boondock but suspect it will be hot and muggy in August so will likely have to stick to hookups.

Many thanks,

Chris

You did not specify where home base was, but if Kentucky not too far out of your way, I still have vivid memories of Mammoth Cave as a kid.

The kids would probably love the Sinks of Gandy. Check out youtube videos of it - it's a creek that starts in a pasture and flows through a cave that you can walk through. We used to do it as kids - you walk in and usually have to swim out the far end.

If they're active they'd probably enjoy hiking to the top of Seneca Rocks.

I live in E TN and took a short trip to W VA last year. My destination was the New River Gorge National Park. As with most national parks they have information and historical displays.

When I was looking for a campground fairly close I found there were quite a few but most were already booked.

If you are going in August plan on it being hot and would not recommend trying to boon dock unless you are willing to run a generator all night to keep the RV cool.

Blackwater Falls SP
Cass Railroad
Seneca Rocks
Greenbrier Resort
Summerville Lake & Dam
Gauley River raft trip (upper if experienced and late August when the dams opened, lower anytime)
New River rafting
Organ Cave
Smokehole Cavern
Coopers Rock SP
Spruce Knob

If you want to annoy teenagers, drive over to the National Radio Quiet Zone, a 13,000-square-mile area that covers the eastern half of West Virginia. No radio or cell service because of the radio telescopes in the area around Green Bank.

Take a look at Pipestem State Park. THe last time we were there, they were just finishing the ZIP Line tour, one of the largest and beautiful tours you can get! They have a campground and TWO Lodges, one assessable only by cable car. Your granddaughters will love it.

Canaan Valley State Resort Park is another favorite. We normally make the 7 hour trip to there twice a winter with our granddaughter and her friends to camp, snow hike, and snow ski. During the summer they have swimming, cable car rides and much much more.
