Interesting trivia: it's illegal to wear high heel shoes in CArmel unless you get a license!
That aside, this past spring we spent a day in Sugar Creek, Ohio - a quaint little town that has an entertaining clock in the center of town, and a great restaurant a few blocks away!

If you enjoy walking through a mid-sized city, my vote is for Savannah, GA. One large central park, and many small ones. The restored houses are quite a visual treat.

Door County WI - The drive up the Green Bay side topping hilltops with views of the Bay and small towns dotted along the shore. Fish Creek and Sister Bar are probably our favorite of these towns.

X2 on Whitefish, MT (was there at Christmas around 8yrs ago..took me back to my childhood Christmases in Astoria, OR)
X2 on Bar Harbor, ME. (Was there to photograph Acadia NP in full fall colors...Magnificent!)
Charlevoix, MI. We drove through here in August of this year. The town was in full bloom.
The harbor at Curaçao in the Caribbean. Heavily influenced with Dutch architecture infused with the charm, culture, and food of South America and Africa.
Juneau, Alaska and the surrounding area. Target rich for those that love the beauty of nature.
And last but not least, literally hundreds (if not thousands) of wonderful towns (large and small) that we've driven through on roads less traveled in the USA and Canada.

Pretty much any American place known for primarily for tourism is out for me. I hate seeing the same type of shops selling the same stuff, differentiated only by having the local site embossed on it. I'm camping to see sites away from towns.
The prettiest town (not city) I stayed in was probably Beaune, France.

I'd offer Lead, SD and Deadwood, SD...or most any place in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
