I called the company and told the dispatcher what had happened. He told me to get a hotel room and call him back. When I was settled in I called dispatch and gave him the hotel's number. I got a call the next morning. The truck was found and I could go get it and bring it home. I called for a taxi, went to the impound area, signed a few papers and brought an empty trailer home.
When I got back I was told I did a good job and knew what to do the next time.
I told them there wasn't going to be a next time and quit.

While I never had a situation like that, I agree with you. You'll never catch my in NYC again. I was there enough as a visitor in my pre-teens and teens and later in my 30's as a consultants. I know better now.
For the uninitiated, it's like anything else, go experience it and see what you think. 8.6 million people like it, or at least live there.... To each their own.
Which brings back a story. I was in NYC consulting for a few days and while at this business, they made an announcement that they were moving the HQ to North Carolina. Many of the employees freaked out. They traveled to work via train/subway and at the new location wouldn't have that. Many/most didn't have cars or knew how to drive. The company had anticipated that and had put together a program to provide financial assistance to purchase a vehicle and also would provide driving lessons. Still people pushed back. I remember waiting for a meeting to start , I was talking with some of the impacted staff and one of the concerns was that the
new location would not have the entertainment that you could find in NYC such as theatre and plays, etc. I asked them how often they went to these plays and they pretty much all said , never , but they were angry that the option was taken away. That being said, the company did indeed move the HQ and many of the staff declined to move and went to other employers in the city. I guess you love it or leave it.
