Williamsburg Campgrounds

We're going to be in Williamsburg for a week-end in June. Any recommendations for a good campground?

We stayed here: Chickahominy River Front Park last summer on the recommendation of friends that used to live there. It is perfectly placed for taking in the area sites.

Ours was a full hookup site (#321, I think) right on the river. We had no problem getting our rig in or out. Even our Direct TV satellite worked.

WE stayed at the ANVIL CAMPGROUND. It is near Colonial Williamsburg and is on the shuttle line. Very easy access to park. Close to wally world and shopping.
If you like BBQ pork then Pierces BBq is the place to eat. They smoke over a ton of pork per day. Ask the park for directions.

We stayed at American Heritage as well. It was nice. I have heard that one of the problems in the campgrounds there is that there is a train that passes through. At AH it was far enough away that it didn't disturb our sleep.

We stayed in a premium site which had a nice patio with walls and a fire pit, and a nice patio set with umbrella. The staff was super friendly and the place was spotless. The bad part is that at 43' long the spot was a bit too short for us. Our levelers were on the concrete pad, but our front door opened over gravel. We couldn't pull further back without being in the road behind us. This wouldn't stop us from coming back in the future.

They are expanding and adding about 50 new sites.

Edited to add picture, first time posting a photo here, I hope it worked....

We have stayed at American Heritage several times and found it to be nice. They also have a nice fenced dog run for those with dogs that need exercise.

Our only complaint at last visit was the interior roads were very dusty.... weather had been dry during that visit. It is nice to hear they are upgrading and adding sites since they do have a lot of open land there.

stayed at Artillery Ridge CG and there is a horse ride tour of the battlefield that I highly recommend. Guide and about 12 riders, with radio mounted on your saddle with an earpiece. You see the battlefield from an entirely different perspective

Williamsburg Campgrounds

OMG - boy would I love that! I have been riding more years than I want to admit, now riding and showing saddle horses. Afraid I couldn't get my husband to get on a horse though. He goes to the horse shows for me and I go to State football games for him and it works well for us! Do you have to stay at that campground to participate?

Artillery Ridge is in Gettysburg, not Williamsburg. But, if you are going there it is a good choice.

We stayed at Artillery Ridge - it is a passport America campground. We bought a CD to play along our tour of the battlefield and that was great. It starts at point 1 (so to say) and guides you along the battlefields. Tells you to pause until you get to point 2 (or which ever). Well worth the few $$.

We stayed there for several nights in Sept 2012. It was a great location for the attractions.

We are headed for Anvil Campground this weekend. We have stayed at American Heritage before and it was a nice, friendly place. Just wanted to try another park in the area this time.
