I agree with what you just said.
However, I do not recommend this campground based on the other choices in the area.
Our retirement journey started out near the Blue Ridge Parkway. Because our son lives here, we have visited many times. Before that I worked on a geological project in the Great Basin.
Willow Beach was the first RV park we stayed at in the area in our MH. I was not impressed. It is ok but I would not go out of my way again.
I have stayed at 4 other Lake Mead NRA campgrounds many times.

No one is comparing it to New England or San Francisco but every place has beauty if you look for it. The desert is beautiful on its own. Many absolutely love it. We would take it any day over a city like San Francisco. Good thing everyone is different and there's a place for all.

Shoeless, North of Las Vegas off of I-15 is Valley of Fire state park. They have a few RV only sites with power and water and regular dry camping sites. It can be hard to find a site, mid week is better. If you have not been there check it out by car first. Further north on I-15 in the Arizona strip is Cedar Pocket. If you get off at the exit and turn right you'll find a 72 site campground along the Virgin River. They have restrooms and a place that you can get water but no hookups. Send me a pm if you want more ideas, lots of places north of Vegas on US 93 and 95

There are beautiful deserts and butt ugly deserts.
My ugly part of the state of NV has two beautiful granddaughters. Should I recommend a campground because of that?
I am a resident of the state of Washington. We retired there because we loved it. Funny thing is that I turned down a job there when I got out of the navy because the place was butt ugly. The area was known for making nuclear weapons.
I do not recommend SF as a place to camp either. It could be. Last summer I drove through on the way to visit my brother in Monterey. I took part in the scenic drive that goes by the ocean beaches like I had done a hundred times.
I was not prepared to drive to the spot where Rita and I were married. Five people on the beach.
So why did we move from one of the most beautiful places with lots of friends and family to a butt ugly WA desert? You do what you have to do and learn to love where you're at.
I love camping. Many times I have gone 10 mile to spend the weekend at a city park. Willow Beach is 40 miles (hard driving) but after one night I go back to the $10 campground 12 miles away.

We're new to camping in the southwest US, so we're new to all these sites. The good news is that apparently if you have the annual national parks pass and you're a senior, the sites are half price a lot of places, so that's really cool. We aren't seniors yet but I have also heard that some places also discount their sites with the national parks pass even if you aren't yet a senior.
We're learning a lot and having fun in the process!

It cost me $10 a night at Las Vegas Bay with a senior pass. This is up from from $5.
I use the NPS web site to research campgrounds in the federal system. My BIL did not know about a box to put your senior pass number. For popular parks like Zion NP booked up in advance, I have sniped the night before to get a reservation.
for example: https://www.recreation.gov/camping/campgrounds/10075120
However, Willow Beach is private and the discount does not apply. The campground was almost when we stayed there in 2015 so they gave us the senior pass discount.
Here is a $10 park where the ranger gave us the white hair discount of $0.
https://stateparks.utah.gov/parks/goosenecks/
So there are breath taking out of the way south west desert locations and expensive city places with cheap campground.
Using the federal system we stayed in NYC on Long Island Sound (Bennet Field) for $15

Cathedral Gorge SP is worth a visit. Far less colorful than Valley of Fire, no doubt, but interesting to see.

Cathedral Gorge is nice state park with electric at each site. Water available and dump station on the way out. A little further north east of Pioche Echo resivor and Eagle valley resivor with fishing. I have not been there recently and not sure if they have any hook ups. Beaver dam state park is close by but is 28 miles of dirt road to get there. I've camped there many times in a tent. I wouldn't take my RV on that road, maybe a trailer. Pahranigat wild life refuge has primitive camping on the upper lake. Narrow road but passable with a motor home or trailer. Multiple others in the area for boondocking. The list goes on.

Thanks for the info. Think I will spend a couple of days there when I head to the PNW.
Last time we were there we camped an Pioche city park. The first part of the trip we took out granddaughter in Utah.
Took this route many times by car and for some reason my son remembers the Ramada INN in ELY. I remember the bad coffee.

Followingsea, in my opinion site is #16 is one of the best. Best place to eat in Ely is Smash n Grab inside the Jailhouse casino. Wave as you go bye my house on US 93 North of Ely.

Some advice please. Going north on US-93 I usually take NV-318 because it is shorter. Is staying on 93 better?
The idea of being a snow bird is going north when it gets hot enough you need A/C and going south before you need to put chains on while maximizing good sailing weather.
I have 4 base camps to park the MH with no additional cost that are nicer than any campground that I have to fork out money for. I use my TOAD for road trips
Getting the boat ready for winter is a chore that I do not like to mix with breaking camp. So I am already to hit the road the next day when I check the weather. I change my plans and get through the first mountain pass and stop for the night. When I went through Ely I saw one snow flake. Since I gave to get past Las Vegas, the next issue is too hot and too crazy.
It is a matter of perspective. If you are in Las Vegas a place like Willow Beach is great, but after a 1000 miles it is just a campground with a very steep road.

318 is about 40 miles shorter. 93 does have different views going into Caliente and Pioche. Going into Caliente you go over a 7000 ft pass. Several campgrounds in the area north of Caliente. From Caliente to Pioche there is a elevation increase then decreases and increases to Majors junction where hwy 6 and 50 join 93. Then you have another 7000 ft pass before going into Ely. I normally use 318 but have used 93 for a change of scenery and if I'm going to Great Basin National Park.
